The Huntingdon Journal. tam antiglow:l4o)ld. The Two Beat Potatoes In reply to our correspondent, H. Bid dle, which two potatoes we recommend as the most profitab!e I;rr market, we reply, that with some fruits and vegetables the two best, and the two best for market, are not always synonymous terms; but in the case of two potatoes, we think they are Early Rose for best early, and White Peach blow for best late. These, in our opinion, are not only the best, but also sell the best. Much was expected from the Peerless, but in this section, within our observation, it has not come up to expectation. Very productive, but ofpoor qualiti, and in many patches we visited last fall, it seemed to have been especially attacked by the potato bug, and almost rendered unsalable by its partially eaten surface. As a table potato it is quite sodden and watery. It will not command the highest price. Thl Early Rose is a really good potato, both for summer and winter, is very pro ductive and very early. It can be readily got off and marketed, leaving the ground vacant for a.good crop of winter cabbage or ether crop. Tho• White Peach Blow is our finest late potato, and brings the best price for family use. In boiling it should first have a paring taken of around its circumference. It is especially dry and mealy, and if there is such a thing, it has a real potato flavor. We have heard connoisseurs in good things speak of a roasted Peach Blow Potato as the finest kind of eating. It has one drawback, of continuous growing till late in the fall, (thus prevent ing putting in another crop). It also makes an enormous growth of top. It is, however, quite productive, and always in demand in Philadelphia for storing away for family use till potatoes conic again.— Practical Farmer. Preserving Shingles There is a good deal better and cheaper way of preserving shingle roofs, than to paint them. We have seen shingle roofs kept till fifty years old, by only the appli cation of lime. Here is a very effective recipe for preserving shingles : Take a potash kettle or large tub, and put into it one barrel of wood-ashes lye, five pounds of white Vitriol, five pounds of alum, and as much salt as will dissolve in the mix ture. Make the liquor quite warm, and put as many shingles in it as can be con veniently wetted at once. Stir them up with a fork, and when well soaked, take them out and put in more, renewing the liquor as necessary. Then lay the shin gles in the usual manner. After they are laid, take the liquor that is left, put lime to make it into whitewash, and apply to the roof with a brush or old broom. This wash may be renewed from time to time. Salt and lye are excellent preservatives of wood.—Ultio Farmer. Plant Often One of the best rules the farmers or garderners can follow to insure success in getting a good stand or tender crops is to plant often. Take, fur example, melons, squashes, cucumbers, lima beans, and such other products as may be desirable to start early, and which often fail when planted early, and apply-the rule at the head of this article, and success would be certain. Fit your ground early ; make broad, rich, flat hills, slightly crowning, to insure dry ness and gain warmth. Then plant early in the season, and one week later put down a few more seeds in the hills with the thumb and fingers; a week later re- peat the planting, and if the season be particularly cold and backward, and the first planting do not appear, a fourth may be necessary. By this method success is rendered certain ; but little time is lost, for the later plantings will grow so fast as to overtake the first.—Rural Home. Apple Tree Borers. Prevention of course is the best thing, and this consists in keeping the ground about the roots of the trees from weeds 'and other "trash," that seems to shelter the insect when laying its eggs; and in ap plication of soap and soft water or soft soap, boiling hot, to the tree in May or June. If the borers are already in the trees, which you can determine by the saw-dust-like borings on the bark and ground about the roots, you can destroy them by the knife, a wire or peeled twig thrust up the hole made by the insect. In using the knife the blade hold verticle so as not to cut across the bark any more than is absolutely necessary. So far as we have seen, borers are not apt to attack thirifty trees that have clean cultivation, and it was much easier to prevent their attacks than to destroy them.—Prairie Farmer. Clean the Churn Much of the bad flavor of butter pro ceeds from the neglect to properly cleanse the churn, pans or other utensils used from the sour milk. I have known churns to become so saturated with it, that sweet but ter could not be made in them. A churn should frequently be filled with lime water or lye to sweeten it, and eradicate the bad odors that have become absorbed into it , or left in some crack of the churn or dash. All pans that have creases at the bottom joint should be discarded or the crease filled up with solder, that the foul stuff may not be secreted there to taint the new milk. Stone pans are excellent, and also the pressed tin without seams. We have frequently found butter to taste as dish water smells—imperfect washing of pane may be the cause. Short-Legged Stock Do farmers know that short-legged stock are the beat---short-legged cattle, horses, sheep, and hogs ? Do they know that all short-legged animals have greater depth of rib and body, more strength and vitality, and better constitution than long-legged animals? Short-legged bulls, stallions, boars, and bucks are always best, other things being equal. A good judge of an imals will always pay more for them. Es chew long-legged stook. Breed to the best always. C. Wishart's Pine Tree Tar Cordial, for Throat and Lung Diseases, has gained an envia- ble reputation from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast, and from thence to some of the first families Europe, not through the press alone, but by per. eons throughout the States actually benefiitted and cured at his office. While he publishes less, so say our reporters, he is unable to supbly the de- mand. it gains and holds its reputation— First. Not by stopping cough, but by loosening and assisting nature to throw off the unhealthy matter collected about the throat and bronchial tubes, which causes irritatioa, Second. It removes the cause of irritation (which produces cough) of the mucous membrane and bronchial tubes, assists the lungs to act and throw off tho unhealthy secretions, and purifies the blood. Third. It is free from squills, lobelia, ipecac and opium, of which most throat and lung reme- diem are composed, which allay cough only, and disorganize the stomach. It has a soothing elect on the stomach, acts on the liver and kidneys, and lymphatic and nervous regions, thus reaching to every part of the system, and in its invigorating and purifying effects it has gained a reputation which it must hold shore all others in the market. They are classified so as to meet the most difficult diseases for which they are offered, not one medicine for all the diseases humanity is heir to. WALKER'S CALIFORNIA VINEGAR BITTERS. Vinegar Bitters are not a vile Fancy Drink, made of Poor Rum, Whiskey, Proof Spirits and Refuse Liquors, doctored, spiced, and sweetened to please the taste, called "Tonics," "Appetizers," "Restor ers," &c., that lead the tippler on to drunkenness and ruin, but are a tree Medicine, made from the native roots and herbs of California, free from all Alcoholic Stimulente. They are the Great Blood Purifier and a Life-giving Principle, a Perfect Renovator and Invigorator of the System, carry ing off all poisonous matter and restoring the blood to a healthy condition, enriching it, refresh ing and invigorating both mind and body. They are easy of administration, prompt in their action. certain in their results, safe and reliable in all forms of disease. No Person can take these Bitters according to directions, and remain long unwell, provided their bones are not destroyed by mineral poison or other means, and the vital organs wasted beyond the point of repair. Dyspepsia or ludyestion. Headache, Pain in the Shoulders, Coughs, Tightness of the Chest, Diz ziness, Sour Eructations of the Stomach, Bad Taste in the Mouth, Billions Attacks, Palpitation of the Heart, Inflamation of the Lungs, Pain in the regions of the Kidneys, and a hundred other painful symptoms, are the offsprings of Depepsia. In these complaints it has no equal, and one bot tle will prove a better guarantee of its merits than a lengthy advertisement. For Female Complaints, in young or old, mar ried or single, at the dawn of womanhood, or the turn of life, these Tonic Bitters display so decided an influence that a marked improvement is soon perceptible. For Inflammatory and Chronic Rheumatism and Gout, Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Bilious, Remit tent and Intermittent Fevers, Diseases of the Blood, Liver, Kidneys and Bladder, these Bitters have been most successful. Such Diseases are caused by Vitiated Blood, which is generally pro duced by derangement of the Digestive Organs. They are a Gentle Purgative as well as a Tonic, possessing also the peculiar merit of acting as a powerful agent in relieving Congestion of the Liver and Visceral Organs, and in Bilious Diseases. Per Skin Diseases, Eruptions, Tetter, Salt Rheum, Blotches, Spots, Pimples, Pustules, Boils, Carbunees, Ring-worms, Scald-Head, Sore Eyes, Erysipelas, Itch, Scurfs, Discolorations of the Humors and Diseases of the Skin, of what ever name or nature, are literally dug up and car ried out of the system in a short time by tba use of these Bitters. One bottle in such eases wit. convince the most incredulous of their curative effects. R. Cleanse the Vitiated Blood whenever you find its impurities bursting through the skin ia Pim ples, Eruptions, or Sores; cleanse it when you find it obstructed and sluggish in the veins; cleanse it when it is foul; your feelings will tell you when. Keep the blood pure, and the health of the system will follow. Grateful thousands proclaim Vinegar Bitters the most wonderful Invigorant that ever sustained the sinking system. Pia, Tape, and other Worms, lurking in the system of so many thousands, are effectually de stroyed and removed. Says a distinguished phy Biologist: There is scarcely an individual upon the face of the earth whose body is exempt front the presence of worms. It is not upon the healthy elements of the body that worms exist, but upon the diseased humors and slimy deposits that breeo these living monsters of disease. No system of Medicine, no vermifuge, no anthelininitics, will free the system from worms like these Bitters. Mechanical Diseases. Persons engaged in Paints and Minerals, such as Plumbers ' Type-setters Gold-beaters, and Miners, as they advance in life, will be subject to paralysis of the Bowels. To guard against this take a dose of Walker's Vinegar Bitters once or twicea week, as a preventive. Bilious, Remittent and Intermittent Feuer., which are so prevalent in the valleys of our great rivers throughout the United States, espeeially those of the Mississippi, Ohio,Missouri, Illinois, Tennes see, Cumberland, Aransas, Red, Colorado, Brazos, Rio Grande, Pearl, Alabama, Mobile, Savannah, Roanoke, James, and many others, with their vast. tributaries, throughout our entire country during the Summer and Autumn, and remarkably so doling seasons of unusual heat and dryness, are invariably accompanied by extensive derange ments of the stomach and liver, and other abdom inal viscera. There are always more or less ob structions of the liver, a weakness and irritable state of the stomach, and great torper of the 'bow els, being clogged up with vitiated accumulations. In their treatment, ',purgative, exerting a power ful influence upon these various organs, is essen tially necessary. There is no cathartic for the purpose equal to Dr. J. Walker's Vinegar Bitters, as they will speedily remove the dark-colored viscid matter with which the bowels are loaded, at the same time stimulating the secretions of the liver, and generally restoring the healthy func tions of the digestive organs. Scrofula, or King's Er it, White Swellings, Ul cers, Erysipelas, Swelled Neck, Goiter, Scrofulous Inflamations, Indolent.lnflamations,Mercurial Af fections, Old Sores, Eruptions of the Skin, Sore Eyes, etc., ate. In these, as in all other constitu tional Diseases, Walker's Vinegar Bitters have shown their great curative powers in the most ob stinate and intractable eases. r. Walker's California Vinegar Bitters act on all these cases in a similar manner. By purifying the Blood they remove the cause, and by resolving away the effects of the intlamation (the tubercular deposits) the affected parts receive health, and a permanent oars is effected. Tke properties of Dr. Walker's Vinegar Bitter. are Aperient, Diaphoretic and Carminative, Nu tritious, Laxative, Diuretic, Sedative, Counter-Ir ritant Sudorific, Alterative, and Anti-Bilious. The, Aperient and mild Laxative proprieties of Dr. Walker's Vinegar Bitters are the best safe guard in all eases of eruptions and maglignant fevers, their balsamic, healing, and soothing prop erties protect the humors of the fames. Their Sedative properties allay pain in the nervous sys tem, stomach, and bowels, either from infiania tins, wind, colic, cramps, etc. Their Counter-lr ritant infinenee extends throughout the system. Their Diuretic properties act on the Kidneys, cor recting and regulating the flow of urine. Their Anti-Bilious properties stimulate the liver, in the secretion of bile, and its discharges through the bibliary ducts, and are superior to all remedial agents, for the care of Bilious Fever, Fever and Ague, etc. Fortify the body against Weenie by purifying all its fluids with Vinegar Bitters. No epidemic can tnke hold of a system thus forearmed. The liver, the stomach, the bowels, the kidneys, and the nerves are rendered disease-proof by this great invigorant. Directions.—Take of the Bitters on going to bed at night from a half to one-and-a-half wine. glass full. Eat good nourishing food, such as beef steak, mutton chop, venison, roast beef, and veg etables, and take out-door exercise. They are composed of purely vegetable ingredients, and contain no spirits.
