The Huntingdon Journal. tram and fignotholtl. KEEPING VEGETABLES. We often hear complaints that potatoes and other vegetables do not keep well ; the fault is not in the season or the vegetables, but in the way in which they are stored and kept. Go through the markets and examine the vegetables brought in by the best market gardners, and it will rarely be found that they fail in keeping these things in the best manner. Take even celery that may is difficult to keep good, and it is brought into market every day as crisp and fine as when freshly dug from the field in autumn, and what is true of this is true of every other variety of vegetable that it is possi ble to keep. Now every person at. all familiar with roots knows per fectly well that they cannot be ex posed for any length of time to the atmosphere without injury. The potato becomes green and sal y. The beet, parsnip and turnip wither and lose their value. All roots should at least be kept in a, dark cel lar ; a damp one is preferable to a very dry one, and coolness is indis pensable. We have kept potatoes and roots well by placing the same in a barrel or cask, shaking sand among them, thus excluding light and air. Vegetables cannot be kept good in a cellar where there is a furnace, and a portion of the cellar should be partitioned off with brick for that purpose. It is a poor plan, if it can be avoid ed, to keep many vegetables in a house cellar, for the exhalations from such decaying matter must be inju rious to health. Cabbages can be kept well outside covered with sea weed, leaves, hay, dr any such stuff that will exclude the frost. A good barn cellar is the best place to keep roots in quantity that are to be used for the cattle, and we often wonder more farmers do not realize the im portance of building such a place. Fruit should be kept in a cool, dark place. The cooler the better if the frost does not get in. We believe in raising vegetables and in keeping them in as good condition as possi ble for use, but in order to do this care must be exercised. Keep them as nearly in the same condition as when they were harvested as possi ble.—Congregationalist. RAILROAD TRANSPORTA TION. The subject of paramount import arce now agitating the public mind, is that of the transportation of farm products. In this connection, the following letter, written by Josiah Quincy, of Mass., to the President of the lllinois Farmer's Association, in regard to government control of railroads, will be read with inter est : "I have just received your favor of the 19th inst. lam much oblig ed to you for the information you give me concerning the anti-monop oly movement at the West. You do me the honor to ask my views of what had best be done for the com mon interest. The first step is to diffuse information, and to draw at tention to the subject. The next is to have a national organization of those who are interested in reducing the cost of transportation. The railroads resemble a regular army, with skillful officers and a full com missariat. The people are like a disorganized mob, that has no con centration of action. Until they have that they are powerless. My own opinion is that ultimately there will be great freight railroads con necting the distant West and the in terior with the Atlantic • that the roakl-bed and the stations will belong to the government; that individuals or associations will be permitted to put their own cars and locomotives upon itunder strict regulations as to speed, which should not exceed eight miles an hour, paying such a toll as would give six per cent, on the actual cost, and keep the road bed andstationsin repair. As there would be no necessity to go upon sidings to make way for express trains, the transportation would be about as rapid, and far more certain, than at present. On such a road prices would be reduced by compe tition, and the amount of capacity for carriage would be enormous, amounting to millions of tons annu ally. Such is my individual opinion as to what will ultimately take place. As before stated, the first step is for thinking men to decide what had best be done, so as to do justice to the capital fairly invested in railroads; and yet protect the interest of the people." REMEDY FOR CORNS. When a young man, says a corres pondent of the Country Gentleman, I used to be very much annoyed by those painful excrescences called "corns," on the toes and feet, until I was told of a very simple but effectu al remedy for them by some person. It was to bathe the feetin tepid water to soften them; then pare them off very closely with a sharp knife ; then rub in well green peach-tree leaves; when, after continuing the rubbing once or twice a day, the corns will entirely disappear, and not return, without the cause which first occa sioned them. I have often tried the remedy, and never yet found it to fail. It seems to be the prussic acid in the peach-tree leaves that takes them away. WATERING MILL—The Michigan Legislature has passed an act which prohibits and punishes the infamous crime of watering milk. The law imposes a fine of from ten to one hundred dollers or imprisonment for ninety days in default of payment for the offence. Exxe should Dever be kept in the same quarters With ,. turkeys, pea- fowls, Guinea hens, or ducks, be cause they worry and annoy each other; and ducks get dirty sitting under the hens. Birds of a feather should flock together. Ifiscellateous. GREAT DISCOVERY ! KUNKEL'S BITTER W/ SE OF IRON.
