DEATH OF JACOB BAKER—IIE IS ;TRUCK BY TER CARS AND HIS BRAINS CRUSHED Ocr.—A terrible accident occurred at Spruce Crock, on last Wednesday evening, which re sulted in the instantaneous death of Jacob Baker, and old and respected citizen of Alex andria. Mr. Baker was a carpenter and was engaged in erecting a church at Spruce Creek. Oa the evening in question, after taking sup per at Mr. L:tird's, his place of boarding, lie started to walk down town to the store. It is supposed that he was just ahead of the Cin. ciunati Express and that he walked upon the down track thinking that he was on the up trick, and, becore he discovered his mistake, the train, which passes this place-at a very high rote of speed, struck him about the head, crushing his skull and scattering his brains. Ile is supposed to lime been knocked about fifiy feet. Ills body was not discovered until some time afterwards. The telegraph opera tor at that point, passing from his office along tie road, stumbled and fell over the body. The death of Mr Baker has cast a gloom over the continually in which he lived and all sym ptthize deeply with his bereaved family. When, oh when, will men cease to walk on railway tracks? Almost e7ery week of our lives we are called upon to record the killing' of some one from thus inviting death ; yes. how frequently, is this the case on a double track road where the person steps frcm one track to the other to avoi l a train ahead, with out looking to the roar, just in time to go crushing among the machinery of the rear train. There should be a heavy penalty.im posed for kalking upm any railway track and then the road should be fenced. These are the only remedies, that we can see, for presery iug life. hundreds are killed annually and 3et no steps are taken to arrest the evil.
