Memorial Day.
Yesterday was duly observed as
Decoration Day by a largo number of
our people - . At one o'clock the pro
cession was fbrmed in the following
order:
The Silver Cornet Band and
Drtim Corps,
Chief Marshal, W. K. Bambinoll,
Clergy,
Post No. 33, G. A. -R., thirty-ore
members bearing wreaths,
Huntingdon Light Infantry, thirty
- moraberdAreased in newuniferniS,
with guns and accoutrements'
Cassville ,Stddiefs' Orphans' School,
forty : two boys, bearing wreaths,
and fifty eight girls.
The line of march was through the
principal- -streets, to the ..Cemetery,
where the exereisOFs were opened iiy
prayer by _Rev.- J. C. Clarke, after
which the General 'Orders wore read
by Comrade T. W. Myton. Th'e Sol
diers' Orphans then, sung a pathetic
piece entitled.`O'cr my father's grave,'
after which the memorial address was
delifered by Rev. B. B. Hamlin, in a
teaching and eloquent manner. Tho
ceremony of decorating the graves
was performed in the usual impressiVe
manner, wreaths and
_baguets being,
placed on each soldier's grade, by the
surviving comrades in the Grand Ar
my of the Republic.
From one to four o'clock the places
of business were closed, and the after
noon being pleasant nothing occurred
to - mar the' fall observance of thdcer
emony. Many citizens of the county
were present, showing that our people
still hold in grateful 'remenahrance 'We
patriotic dead, and - love to gather' to
do them honor.
The Huntingdon• Light Infantry at.
tracted universal attention, this being
their first appearance in their new uni•
forms, and their soldierly bearing gave
ovideneethat they bad been Well drill
ed. ' Their presence inspired the re
flection that - while the dead of the Re
public were receiving the honors of a
thankful people, they had learned the
lesson of patriotism taught by these
ceremonies and are ready to battle for
their Country.
The Soldiers' Orphans gave a free
concert in the Court House in the eve
ning. • The room was jammed with
people. The exercises consisted of de
clamations and singing, and, as one
pupil followed the' other in the order
of declaiming. the audience were in
spired by - the healthy and animated
countenances of each, and continued
applause greeted the praiseworthy ef•
forts of the pupils.
