For. the Farmer.
•, - :
- Yotatoori, ' century ago, Wei& not
cultivated to any . extent in Britain.—
tin Scotland, many of the good folks
declared_, that,
~as potatoes Were not
iii6tierietl,lri the Bible, it was good'
'and sufficient reason why they should
sot be cultivated. 'But a scarcity of
grain and the_good qualities of the po
tato.,were two
,poworful arguments in
favor of - this esculent, and prejudice
and superstition were overcome.
Tuberoses should be placed in a
warm room, during winterovhere the
temperature is seldom below 45°, for
when the bulbs-are kept in a cool
plate the center or undeveloped flower
stem is very liable to decay, although
the outaide'Of - the -, btilV pill remain
sound.
Farmers should not throw away
their potato•stalks. 'The stems and
leaves of the potato are very valuablo
for manure.
Lettuce and spinach can be raised
nearly a month earlier by planting the
seeds late in the autumn, and covering
them an inch. The early frosts will
not injure them.
Water in which potatoes have been
boiled possesses a poison fatal to lice.
Wash the cattle freely, and as their
hides dry, comb them, with a curry
comb.
Fallen.leaves contain not only the
Vegetable matter, but the earthy salts,
lime, potash, etc., needed for the next,
Season's growth and fertility, and that
too exactly in the proportion required
.by the very tree and plant from which
they fall. Save them.
POINTS IN SIIEEP.—An English au
thority gives the following description
of the points a South-down sheep
should present:
"The neck should bo of medium
length, thin toward the bead, but en
larging toward the shoulders, where it
should be broad and high, and straight
in its whole course above and below ;
thest wide, deep, and projecting be
tween-the, fore-legs, indicating a good
cothititution and a dispositiOn to thrive;
the shoulders on a level with the back
and not too wide above, but bowing
outward froth ;the, top to the breast,
leaving; room for the springing rib be
hind; the ribs coming out horizontally
from the spine, extending far back.
ward, and the last rib projecting more
than the others; the back flat from the
shoulders to the setting on of the tail ;
the loin broad and flat, the rump long
and broad, the hips wide; the space
between them and the last rib on ei
ther side as narrow as possible; and
the ribs presenting a circular form like
a barrel."

the United States of America
I=
TliC year which is drawing to a close has
been free from pestilence ; health has pre
vailed throughout the land ; abundant crops
reward the labors of the husbandman ; com
merce and manufactures have successfully
prosecuted their peaceful paths; the mines
and forests have yielded liberally; toe nation
has increased in wealth and in strength;
peace has prevailed and its blessings have ad
vanced every interest of the people in every
part of the Union ; harmony and fraternal in
terest restored are obliterating the marks of
past conflict and estrangement, burdens have
been lightened, means- have been increased,
civil and religious liberty are secured to eve
ry inhabitant of this land, whose soil is trod
by none but freemen. It becomes a people
thus favored to make acknowledgment to the
Supreme Author from whom such blessings
flow, of their gratitude and their dependence,
to render praise and , thanksgiving for the
same, and devoutly to implore a continuance
of God's mercies.
~.,Therefore, I, Ulysses S. Grant, President
of The United States,' do recommend that
Thursday, the 18th of Novembernext, be ob
served as a day of thanksgiving and of praise
and prayer to Almighty God, the Creator
and Ruler of the universe. And Ido further
recommend to all the people of the United
States to assemble on that day in their ac
customed places of public worship, and to
unite in the homage and praise due to the
bountiful Father of all mercies, and in ferv-
ent prayer for the continuance of the mani
fold blessings He has vouchsafed to us as a
people.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set
my band and caused the seal of the United
States to be affixed, this sth day of October,
A. D.' 1869, and of the independence of the
United States of America the ninety-fourth.
By the President : U. S. GRANT.
HAMILTON Ftstv, Secretary of State.
The President•of the United States
having issued the foregoing proclama
tion, I do most earnestly advise that
the people of the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania, for the reasons therein
given, strictly observe its recommend
ations.
Given under my hand and the seal
of the Commonwealth, at Harrisburg,
