61,0bt. HUNTINGDON, PA A Laughing Clergyman, There was- in the parish of 8., a clergyman, the Rev. Dr. T., a man of high character, and distinguished for his dignity of manner. But it was re marked that frequently, when ascend ing the pulpit stairs, he would smile, and almost titter, as if beset by an al most incontrollable desire to laugh.— This excited remark, and at last scan dal ;'finally, it was thought necessary for some of his clerical friends, at a Meeting of the association, to bring up the matter for consideration. The case was stated, the Rev. Dr. T. being present. "Well, gentlemen," said he, "the fact charged against me is true, but I beg you to permit me to offer an explanation. A "few months after I was licensed to preach, I was in a country town, and on the Sabbath morning was about to enter on the du ties of the church. Back of the pulpit was a window which looked upon a field of clover, then in full bloom, for it was summer. As I rose -to cum• MOEICO the reading of the scriptures, I cast a glance into, the field, and there saw-a man_performing the most extra ordinary evolutions ; jumping, whirl ing, slapping in all directions, and with a ferocious energy of action. At first I thought he was mad, but suddenly the truth burst upon me—he had but toned up a bumble-bee in his pantaloons! I am constitutionally nervous, gentle. men, and the shook of this scene upon my risible sensibilities in fact was so great that I could hardly get through the services. Several times I was up on, the point of bursting into a laugh. Even to this day the remembrance of this scene, through the temptation of the devil—often comes upon me as I am ascending the pulpit. This I ad- Mit, is a weakness, but I trust it will rather excite your sympathy and your• prayers than your reproaches." Political Powder-Flask. If the - Uomination of Judgo Packer is sufficient to raise the price of coal $2 per ton, how high a figure will it reach if he should be elected ? Labor ing men are interested in knowing. Asa Packer's profits as a stockhold er i:of the Lehigh 'Valley Railroad, aris ing from the recent advance of tolls upon that road on anthracite coal, are $29,000 per annum. The increase of toll-bas advanced the price of coal one 'dollar per ton in Philadelphia. The coal question is ono of those which the workingmen will bring to defeat Packer. He is at the head of a great coal monopoly and carrying company, and will not in a single in stance represent or favor a claim that can only justly be made by the masses of his region. The I)emoicrats of Pennsylvania are very anxious that the war and all its recollections 'should be forgotten. In this they, are in hearty accord with their. candidate, Judge Packer, who, having wholly forgotten his country during the ' rebellion, naturally, .does not_ feel inclined ,t 9 remember it now. • t'Ondloion claims that the country is is • • Pendleton had bad his way the coun try would not have been thus burden ed. Geary under fire, and he was never defeated when in command. In one of the fiercest battles of the war his first-born son was shot down near him, but he never faltered. His field service was of the hardest kind from the opening of the war to its close.— How readss - Aia Packer's record? During the eclipse at Council Bluffs, where it was almost total, a county Democrat nominating convention was in session. When surrounding objects commenced to darken, not a little dis gust and anxiety was manifested at the unexpected and unpleasant intru sion, and an ardent "wheel horse!' of the lowa Democracy offered a resolu tion denouncing it as clearly unconsti tutional, and an unwarranted outrage upon a free people, perpetrated by the tyrannical Government at Wash ington. It is needless to say that the resolution was unanimously adopted. Tn more any one speaks of him self, the less he likes to hear another talked of.
