God save the Union of the States! GOD SAVE OUR PRESIDENT! Economy in the Family. The time is arriving when more oco. twiny in the family expenses will be it'derae!timpefative. Among our mer cantile people in the cities I hear of many failures, so that families that have been living in opulence and ex travagance that a plain woman like myself knows scarcely anything about, will be obliged to economize fearfully. They will have to adopt a totally dif ferent course of life. Luxuries will have - th be abandoned, and unless they have wealthy friends to lean on for succor, they may be driven to the dreadful ,alternative—even , tiap wives and:datighters---to labor for their own support.' The change will be terrible, heartrending to them, but it will no doubt promote their health and diges tion, enable them to sleep soundly, and wake up in the morning with the con sciousness that the breakfast about to be set before them "tboy have earned -by the sweat of their brew. , We have, no doubt, however, that snob a change will in the end prove •beneficial. The wastefulness, extrav agance and excess of the American people, in eating, drinking and dress ,-,ingchas not a,parallel in the history of 'theiw'orld) and all this has- been op. ‘p_osed to health, happiness and morals. When, as a nation, - we tread in the footsteps of the old nations, we shall have to follow them as families and in• dividuals. If we go, therefore, among the rural and laboring classes of Scot land, Switzerland, France, Germany, ' Sweden and Russia, we may take les sons in, our future modes of, life... In vigorlhey; are among the first people of the earth, yet their ex penditures are nothing in comparison to ours. Indeed, the waste of a com mon American town • of ten thousand people would almost or quite support as large a population in the rural dis. tricts of Europe. • - - Never shall we come to their level, for our country is.new and differently situated, but the next generation of Americans cannot hope - to live as we have, and there we could, take lessons in, iconomy . that'would be very Useful to us. We could discover, as we shall be forcieo to by some means, that a family can be subsisted upon a very small portion of what Americans are accustomed to expend ; nay, that they can be fed on what is now, in many in stances,-thrown ourat their back door to the doge. Those of us that take these lessons and practice upon them Drat, will be tho beat off in the end. SLUR ON t Womm—Of all the evils proialent amongyonng men, we know of none more blighting in, its moral effects than the' tendency to speak slightingly of the virtue of women.— Nor is there anything in which young men aro so thoroughly mistaken as in the low estimate they form of the in tegrity of women—not of their own mothers and sisters, thank God, but of others, who, they forgot, are somebody else's mothers and sisters. As a'rule, no person who surrenders to this debasing habit is safe to bo trusted with any enterprise requiring integrity of character. Plain words should be spoken on this point, for the evil is a general ono, and deep-rooted. If young men are sometimes thrown into the society of thoughtless or even lewd women, they have no more right to measure all oth er women by what they see of these than they would have to estimate the characters of honest and respectable citizens by the developments of crime in our police courts. Let young men remember that their chief happiness in life depends upon their utter faith' in woman. No world ly wisdom, no misanthropic philoso• phy, no generalization can cover or weaken this fundamental truth. It stands like the record of God himself —for it is nothing lees than this—and should put an everlasting seal upon lips that are wont to speak slightingly of women. WE PASS Fort WHAT WE AaE.—A man passes for what he is worth. Very idle is all curiosity concerning other people's estimate of us, and all fear for remaining unknown is not less so. If a man knows that he can do anything —knows that he can do it better than any ono else—he has a pledge of ac knowledgment of that fact by all per sons. The world is full of judgment days, and into every assemblage that a man enters, in every action that he attempts, he is gauged and stamped. In every troop of boys that whoop and ran in each yard and square, a new comer is well and accurately weighed in the course of a few days and stamp. ed with his right number, as if he had undergone a formal trial of his speed and temper. A stranger comes from a distant school, with a better dress, trinkets in his pockets, with airs and pretensions. An older boy says, "It's of no use, we shall find him out to morrow."—.Ralph IValdo Emerson. ger The feast of imagination is as follows: "When your stomach is emp ty and your pocket ditto, sit down and read a cookery-book." AEI' Many men and women have had occasion to know that two do not no. cessarily make a pair. a 6 6, (.(-3) 'e) A. R. L16.(6)6.0 Hair Vigor, For restoring Gray Hair to its natural Vitality and Color, A. dressing which is at once agreeable, healthy, and effectual for preserving the hair. Faded or gray hair is '80072, restored to its original color with the gloss and freshness of youth. Thin hair is thick ened, falling hair checked, and bald ness often, though not always, cured by its use. Nothing can restore the hair where the follicles are destroyed, or the glands atrophied and decayed. But such as remain can be saved for usefulness by this application. Instead of fouling the hair with a pasty sedi ment, it will keep it clean and vigorous. Its occasional use will prevent the hair from turning gray or falling• off, and consequently prevent baldness. Free from those deleterious substanceS which make some preparations dangerous and injurious to the hair, the Vigor can only benefit but not harm it. If wanted merely- for a HAIR DRESSING, nothing else can be found so desirable. Containing neither oil nor dye, it does not soil white cambric, and yet lasts long on the hair, giving it a rich glossy lustre and a grateful perfume. Prepared by Dr. J. C. The reputation this ex cellent medicine enjoys, is derived from its cities, ninny of which are truly marvellous. Inveterate cases of Scrofulous dis ease, where the system seemed saturated with corruption, have been purified and cured by it. Scrofulous affections and disorders, which were fig , gravated by the serofn lons contamination until they were painfully afflicting, have been radically cured in. such great numbers in abnoq every sec tion of the country, that the public scarcely need to b 0 informed of its virtues or uses. Scrofulous poison is one of the most destructive enemies of our race. Often, this unseen and unfelt tenant of the organism undermines the constitution, and invites the attack of enfeehl irm or fatal diseases, without exciting a suspicion of its presence. Again, It seems to breed infection throughout the body, and then, on some favorable occasion, rapidly develop into one or other of its hideous forms either on the surface or among the vitals. In the litter, tuber cies may be suddenly deposited in the lunge or heart, or tumors formed in the liver, or It shows its presence by eruptions on the skin, or foul ulcer ations on some part of the body. Hence the occa sional use of a bottle of this Sarsaparilla is ad visable, even when no active symptoms of disease appear.
