It was the pleasure of the Junior to
visit Lewistown on Friday last to wit
ness the celebration of the national
victories, that was announced.. The
day was ushered in by the ringing of
bells, and at I P. M., the m,ointiers of
the bar, clergy, little girls made to re.
present the different States of the
Union, the Mendelssohn Singing As
sociation, Ladies' Belief, Independent
Qfdi:i' of Good Tempters, with regalia,
and the two: fire companies, with on.
gines tastefully decorated, collected in
the Diamond, preparatory to forming
in procession.., The procession was
s001:1 declared ready to start, and, led
by a brass band and martial music, it
proceeded through . the principal streets
the citizens falling in the rear. Con
spicuoui in tho'procession was a lady
on horseback who represented the
Goddess of Liberty. Another promi
nent feature, and one which caused en
amount of laughter and derision, was
a ludicrous qf Hgy of Jeff Davis, sus
pended by the neck to a gallows; and
drawn by a company of boys. After
the procession had gone the round of
the route, they assembled in front of
the Lewistown:Hotel, where they vere
treated with an eloquent and patriotic
address from Roy. Downs. The crowd
then dispersed, and when we left in
the evening train the citizens.. were
making preparations for an illumine
Alen and bonfires in the evening.
Throughout the day a vast concourse
of people were in town to see tho sights.
Everything paged off grandly, and
the demonstration reflected groat pro,
dit on the patriotism and- lorilt7 of
the people of Lewistown, and gave
ample proof of their esteem and ap•
prociation of the deeds of our Union
defenders.
Our citizens will attend the re
ligious service's at the Court House
to morrow (IVeduesda7) at 12 ? noon.
