The. Trite Peace Party. 'From the Baltimore Clipper.] Everybody, we take it for granted, is for peace. Even Jeff. Davis .wheth- , er he still lives or not, is for peace. All he wants is to be let alone. The probability is ho will continue to want it. We have no doubt that in South Carolina, by this time, they are in fa vor of peace, upon their terms, as they will,be before long, upon any terms. They have had quite enough of the war inaugurated for disunion, it seems, in the good old State of North Caro lina. Pitch, tar and turpentine, aro very geiiid things to have to sell, if you can only yet them' out to sell; but it is what Sam Welter calls "aggrawatin," to have these highly useful on hand, or is store, and be obliged to keep them on hand, when it is actually worth four prices in places where you can't get it. The same profound remark may be mad'e concerning cotton, which is "King." llis Majesty is worth, at the date of these presents, about twenty three or four cents a pound in, Now York. It would therefore be highly desirable for the Commissioners of Finance or the Secretary of the TITAS ury of the Jeff. Davis Government, to negotiate there a feW thousand bales" of their "National Loan" at those re munerative figures, and get a little coffee; and a little tea, and not a little whiskey, trowsers, shoes and hats in return. But those infernal United States war-ships keep laying off and on—and they have no more " peace' than coffee. In sooth 'tis sad, they say, to know the straits, to' which, in these respects, this scarcity of "peace" bat reJuced many excellent persons in the Confed'- &ate States. ; Wheu one's trowsers wear out—here„ fOr - 6:ample, we have, but little diffi- Culty to stop the' flaw, or get another pair. But where, from want of "peace" or pieces, as in the Confederate States at present, reconstruction is impossible, and Compromise impossible, the con S equences may be imagined. , Indeed it is said, that'the' members of the Confed erate Congress, which has sat so long, now never stir from their seats, never even when the chaplain opens the ses sions; and thdt. when any honorable member has to 'make "a motion" the rules 'retjuir4r,stich a position on his part as reveals to, the world seated in the, rear a speetitcle rarely seen out of that (otlicrwise) decorous and reSpect ubfe body of men. Peace would mend . , all this. - We also are in fat or of peace, "Liiti of peace_ on the. baR.F of, Union. We *ant no peace with disanionl;' , fer!:we know them to be incoMpatible, incon sistent, impossible. ,9ur. peace means restoration, governmea. renewal , 3f emiimm ce manufhetures and labor. Abbve all it means Union and the Gdv eminent of the United States. • The* peace means' 'a piece of the. Union— a fragment—the Union iai pieces. And there is no more impudent hypocrisy ever practised, even in the palmicst days of the "Democratic" party, than is no attempted by this trick of call themselves the "Peace" party. They are the war party and they know it. ' They arc in favor of the war begun at 'Sumter a n d now waged against :Washington, by the, States which have ror of Me war which is earned' o n fiy Jeff Davis. They are in faVer of the tsar which drives out the Union men a Tennessee and all the South from their homes. The only peace they 'are for is the peace of-submission of that war—which would degrade and dishonor the United States and render it contemptible in the eyes of all nations. They aro in flivor of the peace which would finally dissever the Union, and arc PEACE IEN on the basis of disunion; and so disun ionists, in fact; and secessionists. It is uselessior them.to attempt to hide their cat underany such.meal.., To call such a war, party by the. name of peace iSiart.insult to common sense. And be yond the.few honest and, sincere man who will allow themselves to.lie.delu ded by.suchircry, mone eambe gulled by esetnit they. are as much "fool" as they who invented it .may be ;con+ sidereal as "knave. l 4.:: ; : CLOTO yOURSELVES!
