In the course of his remarks the Superintendent paid a high compli ment to the East Berlin High School,- conducted by J. Prof. Ferrier occupied the morning hour upon the subject of Gram mar. Prof. Gouts, of Lawrence county, was intnxineed and spoke for some time upon mental cultivation and the general subject of School Discipline. After recess Mrs. Randall continued her elocutionary lessons. At the afternoon session, under the bead endscellaneous business, somewhat of a brow was occasioned by Mr. Wer t; up the rsqport of the auditing committee, presented by Mr. Delap. This report sub mitted a statement of the receipts and ex penditures of the last County Institute, apparently at variance with Mr. Wert's report to the State Superintondent. Mr. Wert proceeded at considerable length to explain and defend himself from the cov ert hunnuatians of dereliction of duty, sharply referring to the persitent efforts that bad been made by hostile parties to embarrass his administration of the dirties of his office. He said he knew the &Oct of the novel motion to appoint an audit ing committee, when it was made on Menday morning, hut had refrained from saying anything then ecause he did' not wish to mar the harmony of tins Conven tion at the beginning of its delTherations; but he deemed it his duty to ventilate that matter before She Convention adjourned: He knew whence the movement originated. Mr. Delap was merely a eat.paw in the handl of the persons who, ever absee his 'on, bad been pursuing hini with sin. dietive motive and 'dishonorable Purpose. He was well aware that certain pariA . es, during the week, had been assklumieli poisoning the minds of teachers on this subject, and he was glad that they had gone so far as to a venturer official action, as it gave him opportunity to vindicate him / self. The remainder of the afternoon Herndon, after a brief Institute drill by Mr. Wert, was occupied by Prof. Ferrier and Mrs. Randall: Notwithstanding the unpleasant eve- Mug the Court-House was again filled at night, the Littlestown Orchestra being present: Ms. Randall delivered her lec ture entitled, "Our Great-Grandmothers and their Great-Granddaughters." After the lecture a pleasant incident occurred, doubtless doubly gratifying to Mr. Wert, in view of what had occurred at the af ternoon session. The President of the In stitute, Capt.:John F. McCreary, on 'be half of the Institute, presented Superin tendent Wert with an elegant Silver Cake- Basket for himself, a Card-Receiver for his lady, and a set of Goblets for Master Reward Snick Wert, as tokens of perso nal regard and recognition of the fidelity and acceptance with which he had dis charge his official duties. Both Capt. licCreari's presentation speech and Mr. Wert's reply were greeted with rounds of applause, Mrs. Randall read Tennyson's Bugle Song and some other selections, after which the Superintendent announced the following educational meetings: Bendersville, Wedneschy eve'g, Jan. 11. Centre Mills, Saturday evening, Jan. 14. Fairfield, Tuesday evening, Jan. 17. FAA Berlin, Tuesday evening, Jan. 24 After the audience had been dismissed the usual annual re-union of Teachers took place. Gettysburg was fixed for the meeting of the next Institute subject to the call: of Comity Superintendent: A considerable number of the members were called on and responded with appropriate speeches and sentiments. At 10 o'clock the President declared the Institute ad- jonrned The present has probably been the !mot largely attended of any session of the In stitute yet held. Of 161 actual Teachers in the county, 150 were prevent the whole or a part of the week. In addition a con siderable flambe' of 'retired teachers, and also teachers from York and Franklin Bounties, and from Maryland, were pres ent, and manifested a lively interest iu all the exercises of the week. The following Resolutions, reported by the Coaamittee, were unanimously adopted: 1. The emcees which has crowned this, another return of the &lams Co.
