StrianklApilialmholy ease of stdei4e took place in Tyrone. township, on Mon, - , day morning last. Mr. George Mackley,' an aged and highly respected farmer, ime been laboring undei depression of spi rits, 'with a suicidal tendency, for some mouths, so much so as . to excite uneasiness among' his friends. On Ilfosulay Mr. Mackley : ate breakfast as usual withhis family. Short, ly after,.Mr. Peter - Miller drove up to the house, and left a couple of children to. spend the day. Between nine and ten .o'clock, Mrs. Mackley, who had procured some nuts for the childnin, went with them to the black-smith. shop to get a, hai - nmer. - Missing her: husband, she went td the Cooper Shop, across the road from the house, and was horrified to find her husband dead. He owned a small shot gun, which he had loaded with buck-shot. The position of the body and other indi cations showed that he held the mussel of the gun to his head with his left h,and, his right on the trigger. The gun being dis charged the charge passed through his brain,, the shot lodging in the ceiling. Instant death must have ensued. Mrs. M. imediately gave the alarm, by ringing the Ip4 dinlner bell , :which summoned the neighbors. It is a most melancholy case. Mr. Mackley wa/73 years of age, and was highly esteemed by all who knew him, being a gentleman of most exemplary character. Recently lie filled the office of Director of the Poor. Last Week lie was idGettysburg attending Court, and Mr. JohnS, the Steward of the Almshouse and an old personal friend, accompanied him part of the way home. On the way, Mr. Mickley; manifested deep depression of spirit, having morbid apprehensions of. coming to want. Mr. Johns endeavored to relieve his mind and counselled strongly against the idea of self-destruction. There can be no doubt that the deceased was laboring under a species of insanity, brought on by morbid apprehensions of pecuniary difficulty, apprehensions which were groundless. The discharge of the gnu was not heard by the family, and the first they knew of it was the finding of the body by 3lrs. Mackley. An inquest was held on the body by Esquire Pittenturf, which rendered a ver dict in accordance with the facts. The remains were intered, on .Tuesday, at St. Paul's (Lutheran) church in New Chester, attended by a large concourse of relatives and friends--Rev. Mr.. Honeycutt, of the Lutheran church, and Rev. Mr. Davis, of the Reformed church, officiating. IDENTIFIED.—Last week we mnicedllie arrest, by Detective Rouzer, of a stranger who wave his name as Ross, on suspicion of being a horse -thief. Ile had in his pos session a fine Bay Mare. Mr. Rouser, being satisfied that it was a stolen amimal, started a trail, and at Washington, D. The owner was telegraphed to, and came to Gettys burg on Tuesday with Mr. Rouzer, and at once identified the mare as his property. Ross, who was still in jail, owned up and agreed to accomPany Mr. Rouzer to Vir ginia. They left on Wednesday morning. Ross admits to being connected with a gang of horse-thieves who operate on a Hue from Virginia, through Maryland, to Penu.sylvania. M LOCAL 114:111S. rtutuc s.tuTs. It is th'e largest colleCtion of living animals, birds, Ike. in the country, numbering over MO specimens. There is no Circus connected with it, the proprietors relying on the es sential merits of the Menagerie to attract attention and command approval. We notice that our exchanges, where Vain Am `burg & Co., have exhibited, speak in the highest terms of it, as full realizing all that was proniiscd., It may be a long time before our people will have a similiar opportunity to see so large a collection of animals, and no one should fail to embrace the present . opportunity.
