*itin, , tuba, #inuitisgb METHOD OF REARING 'Toys° CAT TLE. There are two object s in rearivg calves, each Of .t which of great importimee.— lst,—To effect It without the assistance of milk : at all; and 241,—T0 improve skim milk in such a manner as to make it more nutritious; it being - weir knOwn that there is a prodigious difference in the growth and thriving of the animal, when fed with new or skimmed milk.— I followed the method of gruel, made my barley and oats ground, with the greatest exactness, last year with two calves, both of which, so far from being reared, were so reduted that though I changed their diet to is ilk, it was too late, and they both died. My method is this:—ln two or three days after they are calved, I take the calves from the cows, and put them by themselves; I then give them a kind, of water gruel, composed of barley about ohe-third, and two-thirds oats, - ground very fine, that is boiled about half an hour; I give each calf about a quart, in the morning and the same quantity at sunset, and increase it as the calf .grows older. After they have had this diet about two weeks, I put a little hay in their stalls, which thsy will gradually eat, I keep them in this manner until they are about two months old, then I turn them out to grass. By this method I have raised between fifty and sixty head within the past four years, and with a trifle of expense. I have come to the second object, viz.: that of improving skim milk, a desider atum as much to be desired as the for mer. I take one gallon of skimmed milk, and add to it about half a pint of common molasses, stjrring until well mixed; add.to this one ounce of linseed oil-cake mixing it thoroughly; :then let this mixture be put into the other part of the milk, and the -whole made as nearly warm as new milk, and in this state it is fit to use.—American Stock Journal. CAUSTIC LINE FOR INRECT)3.—There are few inwcts that can withstand a dose of freshly slacked lime. " We always keep a quantity of it on hand ready for sprinkling over plants infested with slugs or bugs of'any kind; and it has always proved:effectual if applied at the right time. Last year, the whitepine worm attackedmearly every pine tree on our place, but two or three-dustings of lime wheri the trees were wet with dew banished or deStroyed this pest, which in a few days, if unchecked, would have stripped every leaf from our trees. The asparagus beetle appeared upon our beds of this vegetable in countless numbers, but a few doses of lime have made them leave, and the plants are healthy and vigorous at the present time. We have driven from our garden the rose-slug, cabliage-flea, and numerous other pests, by the use of this same ma terial, and we have never observed that the plants were damaged by its use. A correspondent at the West says that he has entirely checked the ravages of the Colorado Potato-bug by freely using lime upon the plants, and we have no doubt that others might be equally successful by .a persistent use of this material.— Lime * is so cheap that no One can object to its use on that score, and even if it fails to kill the insects, it will usually do the land good wherever applied.— Hearth and Home. jUTKIE GRAVES, of Herkimer, N. Y., states that he soiled a horse on an eighth of an acre of grass, and considers it the proper way to feed stock, as it unques tionably is. (0 "Cs 0 - g, :tit. oLII COIMITT OFFICIIES. SthIENOS'S 'GREAT people.never , learn to know that a diseased liver and stomach= earn?' disease the entire syleem? The Principhts of aommon aerate - teach thie. and yet there ate hundreds who ridicule the idea, and continue In Uie .eourSe, which aimed ineviMbly brings them permaturely to the grave. Living as themajority of the people'dti, at oompfets vbrt anee with the 'sweet nature, It must be apparent to all thM,Sooner or ' Mter, nature wilt revenge besselL , and tkat persons who indulge to excess in the use of very rich or indigestible food ora intaixteating drinks, Invariably pay a heavy penalty In the end. The stomach becomes disordered and refuses to act; the liver falls to perform Its functions; dyspepsia and its attendant evils follow, and still the suffering individuals tier skit in clinging to the thoroughly exploded ideas of the pOt. Dr. Schenek's medicines are recom mendedlo all such. They bring sure and certain relief wherever they are used as directed and all that is necessary to establi s h their reputation with every ailing man or ,woman in the land is• a fair and Impartial trial of them. Let those who are skeptical on this point, and who have. permitted Interested person, sloprejudice them against these DOW celebrated remedies for Consu roption, discard their prejudices, and be governed by, the princi ples of rdason and common sense. If the system is disordered depend upon it, in nine cases out of ten 'the seat of disorder will be found In the stomach 'and liver. .To cleanse and invigoratet, he stomach and to stimulate the liver to healthy ac tion. use SCHENCK'S MANDRAKE PLLLS.—The daily increasing demand for these pills is the.best evi dence of, their value. Thousands upon thousands of boxes are sold daily. Why? Simply because they'act promptly and emclently. Invade who may not hind it convenient to call on Dr. Schenck In person are informed that' full and complete directions for use acconimny eachipackage the MANDRAKE PILLS, PULMONIC SYRUP AND SEAWEED TONIC.-- , These medicines will cure consumption unless the lungs are so far gone that the patient Is entirely beyond the reach of medical relief. Ittlay be asked by those who are not familiar with the Virtues of these great remedies, do Dr. Sehenck's medicines effect their wonderful cures of consumption?" The answer is a simple one. They begin their work of restoration by bringing the stomach, liv er and bowels into an actve healthy tondition. It Is food that cures this formidable disease.— SCHENCK' S MANDRAKE PILLS act on tile liver and stomach, promoting healthy secretion, and removing the bile and slime which have resulted from the Inactive or torpid Condition of these organs and of the sYStein generally, This slug gish st ate of the body, and the consequent accu mulation, of the unhealthy substances named prevent the proper dimistion of food, and, as a natural consequence creates disease, which re sults Jn prostration and finally In death. , , SCIIE3ICK'S PUI,MONIC SYRUP and SEA ' WEED TONIC, when taken regularly, mingle with the food, aid the digestive organs, make good rich blood, and as a natural consequence, give flesh and strength to the patient. Let the faculty say what It may, this is the only true cure for con sumption. Experience has proved it beyond the shadow of a doubt, and thousands are to-day alive and well Who a few years since were regarded as hopeless eases, but whoavere induced to try Dr. Schepck's remedies, and were restored to penna. nentliealth by their use. One , of the and steps the physician should take ,with a consumptive patient Is to invigorate the system. Now bow Is this to be done? Certainly not by_giving medicines that es hand alai enervate —medicinesthat impair Inste a d of improve the functionsof the digestive organs. Dr. Sehenck's medicinee cleanse the stomach and bowels of all substances which are eateulabst to irritate or weaken them. They create anappstite—promote healthful digestion—make good blood, and, as a consequence, they Invigorate and strengthen the entire system, and more especially those parts which are diseased. If this cannot be done, then the case must be regarded as a hopeless one. If the physician ends it' impossible to make a PATIZST /1111.4 lIIINGUY, if the diseased Person cannot partake of good nourishing foal and pro perly digest it„ WM impassible ttiat he am pin Rush and Strength; and it is equally Impossible to bring a;patient to this condition so long as the liver is hardened with diseased bile, and the stomach laden with unhealthy slime. Almost be firs w t i uest made to the physician by a consumptive pati ent is that he will prescribe medicines t&t remove or allay the cough, night sweats and chills, which are the sure at tendants on consumption. But this should not be done, as the cough Is only an effort of nature to relieve itself, and the night sweats and shills are caused by the disessad lungs. The remedies or dinarily prescribed do more harm than good.— They impair the functions of the stomach, impede healthy digestion, and aggravate rather than cure the disease. There Ls, afrer all, nothing like facts with which to substantiate a position. and it Is upon facts that Dr. Schenck. relies. Nearly all who have taken his medicines in accordance with his directions have not only been cured of consumption, but, from the fact that these medicines act with won derful power upon the digestive organs, patients thus cured speedily gain flesh. Cleansing the system of all impolitic*, they lay the f4undation for a solid:substantial structure. Restoring these organs to health, they create an appetite. The food is properly assimilated; the quantity of blood Is not only increased, but Is made richsand strong and in the face - of such a condition of the system all disease must be banished. Full directions accompany each of the medi cines, so that it is not absolutely necessary that patients should see Dr. Schenck personally, unless they desire to have their lungs examined. For this purpose be is at his principle office. No, 15 North Sixth St., corner of Conuneree, Philadel phia, every Saturday. from G A. AL, until 1 P. M.
