What I We mean by attention, is a studious, careful search for the best way of accomplishing certain desired results, not a superficial investigation of some theory merely for the purpose of creating difference and provoking discussion. The day has, happily passed when being a farmer is synonomous with being a blockhead. It 'requires something more than mere phy sical strength to keep up with the ad vance of the age in farming as well as science. Many of the systems of years sgo are no more applicable tothe demand of 10-day than would be an ox-team to run an opposition freight line across•the Plnins. The fanner who reads much, Ili id reads that much with care, is the one who stands in advance in intelli gence and prosperity. Science can aid• the farmer in raising wheat or corn just as much as it can aid the miller in grinding it; and thescience to be applied is agriculture is nothing more than a study of the composition of soils and the properties that are drawn from them by certain grains. Gnicsapro WAOONB.—Few people fully appreciate the importance of thor oughly lubricating the axels, etc., of wagons and carriages, and fewer know what are best materials and the method of applying them. A well made wheel will endure common wear from ten - to twenty-tip years, if care is taken to use the righrkind and proper amount of grease; but if this matter is not attend ed to, they will be used up in five or BLS years. Lard should never be used on a wagon, for it will penetrate the hub and work its way out around the tenons of the spokes and spoil the wheel. Tallow is the best lubricator for axeltrees, and castor oil for iron. Just grease enough should be applied to the spindle of a wa gon to give it a light coating. This is better than more, for the surplus put on will work out at the ends, and must be forced by the shoulder bands and nut washers into the hub around the outside of the bolus. To oil an axletree, first wipe the spiridle dry with a cloth wet with spirits of turpentine, and then apply a few drops of castor oil near the shoulders and end, One teaspoonful is sufficient to grease the whole. TURNIPS AMONG TICE CORN.—A cor respondent says: It is frequently the case that in passing through corn fields in the autumn, we find the space between the rows occupied with sturdy weeds, sometimes the spurious vegetation over tops the maize, and "casts it into the shade. Now, I would inquire, is it not much better and more prudent, in every sense of the word, for the farmer to oc cupy the soil monopolized by the exhaust ing weeds with some crop that will con tribute to his resources, than to have it HIV with such production, and which will not only "sap the land" most wretch edly, but foul it with the dißsPmi nation of their minute and multitudinous. seeds? Certainly no farmer can doubt the affirm ative. By sowing the purple top turnip seed at the last dressing of the corn crop, and "scuffing or sewing it in just before a rain and allowing that to cover it, he can have a hundred bushels of good tur nips per acre, if the soil be rich and well cultivated, instead of a host of worthless and pestilent weeds. SCHENCK'S GREAT MEDICINES—WW people never leant to know that a diseased IlTer and stomach neces sarily, disease the entire system? The plainest Principles of common sense teach this, and yet there are hundreds' who ridicule the Idea, and continue In the course which almost inevitably brings them permaturely to the grave. Living as the majority of the people do, at complete vari ance with tne laws of nature, It Must be apparent to all that, sooner or later, nature will revenge herself • Bence we and that persons who Indulge to excess in the use of very rich or IndllPxstinla food or intoxicating drias, invariably pay w heavy penalty In the end. The stomach beco mes disordered and refuses to het ; the liver falls to perform its functions, dyspepsia and its attendant evils follbw, and still the suited* individuals per sist in clinging to the thoroughly exploded ideas of the pest. Dr. Schenck's medicines are recom mended to all such. They bring sure and certain relief wherever, they are used as directed, and all that is necessary to estabUsh their reputation with every ailing man or woman in the land is a fair and ImmrUal trial of them. Let three who are skeptical on this point, and who have permitted Interested persons teprejudlce them against these now celebrated remedies for Consumption, discard their prejudices, and be governed by Ilse princi ples of 'reason and common sense. If - the system is disordered depend upon it, In nine cases out of ten the teat of disorder will be found in the stomach and liver. To cleanse and invigorate the stomach and to stlmuhte the liver to healthy ac tion, use SCHENCK'S MANDRAKE PILLK—The daily. increasing demand for these Mils Is the best evi. , deuce of their value. Thousands upon thousands of boxes are sold daily. I__Neby? Simply because they act promptly and eMelently. Invalids who may not antra convenient taaiß on Dr. Schenck in person are informed that fun and complete directions for use accompan y each packaf the MANDRAKE PIL LPULMONIC SYRUP' AND SEAWEED TONI .—These medicines will cure consumption unless the lungs area° far gone that the patient Is - entirely beyond the reach of medical relief. It may be asked by those Who are not familiar with the virtues of these peas remedies, "How do Dr. Schetteit's medicines effect their wonderful cures of consumption?" , The answer is a simple one. They begin their work of restoration by bringing the stomach, liv er and bowels Into an actve healthy condition. It Is food that curet this formidable disease.— SCHENCK'S MANDRAKE PILLS act on the liver mud a omach, promoting healthy secretion, and removing the bile and slime which have resulted from the Inactive or torpid condition of these organs, and of the system generally. This slug. gts state of the body, and the consequent accu mulation of the unhealthy substances named prevent the proper digestion of food, and, as a natural ii n ti=ueace mates dise4l3o_ , which re. suits In lon ana Many In death. SCHE CK'S PULMONIC SYRUP and SEA WEED TONIC, when taken regularly, mingle with the food, aid the digestive organs, make good rich blood, and as a natural consequence, give flesh and strength to the patient. Let the faculty say what It may, this Is the only true cure for con sumption. Experience has proved It, beyond the shacWw of a doubt, and thousands art today alive and well who a few years since were r eed as hopeless cases, but Who were Induced to try Dr. tichemiKs remedies, and were restored to perma nent h , ulth by their use. One of the first steps the physician should take with a consumptive patient is to invigorate the system. Now how Is this to be done? Certainly not by giving medicines that exhaust and enervate —medicines that Impair instead of Improve the functions of the digestive organs. Dr. lichenck's medletnes cleanse the stomach and bowels of all substioes which are calculated to Irritate or weaken them. They create an appetlte—promote healthful digestion—make good Mood, awl, as a consequence, they Invigorate sad strengthen the entire system, and more especially UK= parts which are diums.o 11 this cannot be done, then the case must be regarded as aho less one, If the gilYslelah Dugs It lip 1)10 to make a PATIIGNT 7 T.EI, saisolty. if e diseased person cannot partake of good n Dg food aII/1 pro. ou poor dig= It, It is impossible that he cati n neskand strength: and it is equally linposslble to bring a patient to opreondition so long as the liver is burdened with Misused bile, and the stomach laden with unhealthy slime. Almost the AM request made to the physician by a consumptive patient is that he will prescribe medicines that will remove or allay the cough, night sweats and chills, which are the sure at tendants ou consumption. But this should not be done. as the cough is only an effort of nature to relieve itself, and the night sweats and chills are caused by the diseased lungs. The remedies or dinarily prescribed do more harm than good.— They Impair the functions of the stomach , impede healthy digestion, and aggravate rather than cure the disease. There is, after all, nothing liko faces with which to substantiate a position, and It is upon facts that Dr. Schenck relie.s. Nearly all who have taken his medicines In accordance with his directions have not only been cured of consumption, but, from the fact that these medicines act with won derful power upon the digestive organs, patients thus cured speedily gain flesh. Cleansing the system of all Impurities, they lay the foundation for a solid. substantial structure. Restoring these organs to health, they create an appetite. The fbod is properly assinulated: the quantity of blood isMot only increased, but is made rich and strong and in the face of such a c...indltion of the system an disease must be banished. Full directions accompany each of the medi cines, so that It is nut absolutely necessary that patients should see Dr. perscnially, unless they desire to have their lungs eurained.
