&hiAdlißoTia =II SEED IPOTATOWIL A cornwpondent of the Practiced _Fanner writes as follows: As the imp' son On selecting seed potatoes for spring Plantinittantrnanhlng. I thought that the 'results of sotheciperiMenting with a Sew 'whales, might interest 110M11 of the numerous-readers of your valuable monthly. I will begin with the ABLY Hot. In the spring of 1868, I pumtunerd from 11/... g.. Bliss one pound, of Wont- , riety, which cut into forty-eight gimp eyiksind plantedln the gird= with no extra cultivatibn, yielded mesighty twq pounds of Sne large potatoes. I found them to keep remarkably well through the wintar, showhig no signs of rpt. f . hi early parrof May, 1869, 'I planted this product in the field, in rows, set about one foot apart in the row, and in Augastitook up forty bush -els of fine clean good shaped potatoes ; which are keeping wellso far, 'flowing no indieations of rot. In taking them up, I had them placed at once in the cart )the pickers following the plow,) and stored in'the: agar, witlefidi sun burning, *Web I think le one of the causes of rot, In preparing thogrottud far potatoes, I alwajti-rattnuris it tbomnghlY; plow the manure In and barrow well, and mark out the rows three feet apart. I prefer:o4 pal to the old, matilod sf itewnielligOlh the itsw, as the monied id the manorearith the petatobas a tend ency to cause it to rot in the ground. OLLKAX. - In the spring of 1868,. I planted one pound of Climax, which yielded me liver forty-five pounds of fine handsome potatoes ; also the same time, one pound of BREWS PEOLI7IO, from which I. obtained only twenty five poulth . Jrave these last, tWo . varieties no extra cultivation—my ob ject not being to raise an . elstru-crop, 'ithdhz but to test what they Wadi& 'do Sir cultivation—another year's trial will be regained to deoida on theinner- Its as field crops. I also planted and cultivated, In the same manner, four pounde if WOINIMIIIt r BEILL POIMX01:1, from which I obtained 111-4 bushels., Thai* are no a large, but unk a remark• ably tine eating potatoe. I 'cooked a few of thsm when about half grown, and they were Ilke little bags of meal. Also phuited et the same time four pounds of • 1 trAsulimin„ These yielded me about two and one half hnahela of fair potatoes, but did l l not map pto toy expectations. For .g a la keeping potato, I found none wiped to the PINK EVE RtSTY COAT. While most other varieties have sprouted and *hrlveled •in the spring, this one still remains hard and firm • it yields well, 0/Imp turns out of the ground cleau=4md in five years that I have cultivated it, I have never seen a sign of rot. I find this variety to yield much better from cat sets—unisss in 4 very dry seesiOn They grow on until the frost kills the tops. THE wArtitrsoss gave me a remarkable fine yield last year; but as I did not =mune the amount planted, I am not able to give the preduct, per bushel. Some of my neighbors complain of the Harrisons rotting ; so far there is no rot in mine, which I attribute to their being taken into the cellar as . soon as.dug. I would recommend the last -named varieties for late planting, and Early Rose for early , use. A DISCOVERY Amour Conw.—ln this thinking and observant age, new ideas and discoveries are being constantly made known, many of which, it is true, are never afterwards heard of, while others pap ',Wotan treasure of established fact, when their merit has been proven. We have just met with the following paragraph in an• ex clu3ge : "An letellifiestt Am/ reliable neigh , bor of oils, who has for many years been makingexi=ients - with torn, has discover e d rttmoe and value in replanted corn whfelt is quite novel and worthy of publigajion. We have always thought that replanted corn was of very little consequence, but this gentleman says 'it is of so much conse quence &ill:plants whether it is needed pr not—or rather, he plants two or three weeks after the crop is planted,. hill about every fifteenth row each way.' He says: 'lf the Weather be come' dry during the filling time, the Illic, andtwskel bothbeco me dryanddead. In this condition, if it should become seasonable, the silk revives and renews its growth, but the tassel doe! not re pover. Then, for want of pollen, the new silk is unable to fill the Pities for which it was designed. Tha pollen from the replanted corn ip then ready to supply the silk, and the filing is pompleted.' He says nearly all, the abortive ears, so common in all corn prpps, is caused by the want of pollen, and that he has known ears to double their else in the second filling."— ' Western Bural. BEADING FOB FAWKES'S! BOYS.—An intelligent and thrifty farmer says:— But for the co-operation of my boys, I should have failed. I worked bard, and so did they. The eldest Is nearly twenty-one, and while .other boys in the neighborhbod, yonegeir, have keit their parents, mine have "tuck to me when I most needed their services. I attribute this result to the fact that / have tried to make bome 'pleasant for them. I have furnished them with attractiveand'useful reading; and when night comes, And the day's labor is ended, instead of running to the rail road station and adjoining towns, they gather around the great lamp, and be come absorbed In books and papers." Such is substantially the testimony a farmer, who has know how hard ne struggle for a fOoting on free soil, without capital, is, and how valuable and comparatively cheap are the aids wbich good readin g brings to him. Prow IND= CLOVER.—FaXI7IOIII cannot manure more 'cheaply or sue cessfully than by plowing down green Glover. %Ws is especially true with arms locaticil so far away from cities or towtises to make the manures obtained from them expensive. A poor Amid of grew will repay the impetuous of con verting it into hay, but may lay the foundation of a good crop of wheat, by .plowing it down. It isnot well to take everything that grows off the soil, add put nothing on. A MOWS.
