things done to dumb beasti is putting trot
en iron bits into a herse'imartilb. It is mkt
only painful but ariangetons act. Fur every
time living flesh touches a metal much -be
low the freezing point, the latter extracts
the beat from the former and freezes it.
Thus a horse's month becomes frozen by
the cold iron several times a - day put into
it ; each time causing these freezlngs to go
deeper and deeper, to end at last in exten
sive ulceration. With such a sore month
the poor horse retirees to eat and pines
away, which calls the horse-doctor in.
They call it bole, glanders, horse-ail, &c,
and go to 'cramming down poisonous drugs
in big doses; and the next you know of
the poor abused creature, be is trun4led off
to be food for fish or the crows. Many a
valuable horse has been 'mysteriously' lost
in just this way.
Thin Hug and humane people Avoid this

trouble, and sometimes impossible, as in
night work like staging and physician's
work. Now all this trouble and loss are
entirely avoided, as we have found on trial,
by gettingthe harness-makers to get leath
er bits for winter use, so made that no met
al substance can touch the flab. They
are durable and cost only a halt a dollar.
We wouldn't exchange ours for agold one,
if it couldn't be replaced. Don't fail to try
it.
GOOD Mus.—The following rules
, were unanimously adopted by the
Illinois and Wisconsin Dairymen's
Association, "to Ensure the delivery of
pure, sweet milk."
1. That no milk is good which
,is
made from dfthy, stinking water, of
• sloughs . and frogs pounds.
2. That no milk is good that comes
from cows dogged, or driven in hot
weather, from the pastures to the sta
bles.
3, That no milk is good that comes
'from cows pounded or kicked and
weeny treated by brutal men.
4. Milk is not good that oomes from
diseased ooWs—cows that have sores
filled with pus, or that have udders
broken and running with oorruption.
Cosmos candles are adulterated exten
sively with extracts and substances injuri
ous to the human system, and in some ca
ses are really poisonous. Terra alba, or
white earth, is allied with the sugar In the
manufacture of lozenges. The article irri
tates the coati ig of the stomach and bow
els.' It can be porchseed for about a cent a
pound. In the manufacture 2f gum drops,
glue is used in* or gum arable, the former
costing but a few cents per pound, and the
latter about forty cents. 'Verdigris, Tonha
bean, Paris green, chroine yellow, Berlin
blue, amine, and sublimate of mercury
are all Used,„each of which is either a dead
ly poison, or very injurious to the system.
The common method of fierring candies,
in order to produce them economically,
can be readily accounted for. Poisens are
much more cheap than genuine ex
tracts. Peach flavors in candied almonds
and sugar plums are obtained from full oil,
which is very poisonous. The bitter al
mond flavor is created from unadulterated
prussic add; pineapple is procured from
very rotten cheese and nitric acid. Candies
are made, purporting to be flavored with
fruit from which no extracts tan be obtain
ed.
