IFOL ocropraiL The work in the garden for this month is as follows: Winter Spinach.—The Spinach pre viously seeded and in good groWing con dition should now be carefully weeded, and the plants thinned • oultoabonefour inches apart._ If the soil is not very rich top-dress after hoeing with well.rotted bam-yard ma: nure—after the hard frosts set in sprinkle over the bed a light dressing of straw, chaff, eaves or any other like material as a pro: tection of the plants through the winter. Lettuce.—Set the lettuce plants, if they are now large enough, out in a warm bor _ der. See that the ground has been welt spaded and well mindred. In setting out the plants let them stand six inches apart, and when cold weather sets in protect them with a light covering of brushwood or straw. Setting Out - Cabin:lga Rtants.L l ßarly in the month, Choosing for thist!pnr pose mild, moist weather, prepaie s bed for cabbage. Manure. It heavily, for . the soil cannot be made too rich,. and. choose for the bed a southeastern expo. sure if it is to be had. After spading' rake the soil thoroughly -and then throw it up into . paraleil ridges from twenty-seven inches to three feet' apart. Make these ridges Mnn Iburto six inches high. Beat down the slopes of the ridges firmly with the back of the spade. When this Is done set the 'plants about midway down the slope of north side of the ridge. Let the plants stand six inches apart. To wax& the close of November strew sta- ble manure or loose straw along the valleys between the ridges, and to about the height of the plants stand on the slope of the ridge. Leave all thus through the winter. As eosin as the frost is out of the ground in the spring draw down the earth from the crest of ridges, into the valleys with a' hoe so as to level the entire surface. Thin out the plants as they advance in growth. Keep the soil loose and free, and free of weeds AB the season advances, and as the remaining plants begin to ex pand draw earth -about their roots. As the third and last working, give them a final hoeing and earthing up. Cauliflower and Broccoli.—Work these carefully during the month, and keep the soil loose and deem. To. wards the close of the month oom mance to hill them: Endives.—Tie these up for blanch ing. "Asparagus Bede.—Mow all off and clean thoroughly the asparagus bed as soon as the haulm begins to turn ye!- low. Fork lightly, and flnkih by top.: dressing the beds liberally—first with well-rotted stable manure, and ever this a mixture of salt and ashes, the proportions being three parts of salt to one of ashes. ' ' Celery.—Earth upon celery from time to time, and water freely in dry weather. Small Saktding.—The final seeding for the season may be made during the first half of the month. ilhubarb.—Rhnbarb seed sown dur ing this month will advance the plants a year over seed sown in the spring. Shallots, Garlic and Chives.—An these roots may be planted out this month. Motu Radish.—Plant out a bed of this wholesome condiment early this month. The crowns of old roots w speedily strike and when once they get possession there will be no difficulty whatever in perpetuating them. /i'aspberriee, Gooseberries ci:ndc-Out rante.—New pliotatkino of those nvii, now be set out. Plant the Raspberries four feet apart In the rows, and the gooseberries and currants at A distance of six feet apart. Of the latter, cut tings may now betaken and planted In a warm border, ready to vet out the fol lowing auttunufur the spring au ing it. THE BEST WASH FOR TREES.-OCEO. ber is the beet period for the autumn scraping and Washing Of fruit trees . The insects which hide in the bark and crevices of the trees haire by that time retired to their winter quarters and can be easily destroyed. There is nothing equal as wash with which to scrub the trees than a preparation of say one pound of whale oil soap to a large buck et of water, well dissolved. There nothing more nauseous to insects than It will lay "cold" everything that we have tried It on but the Cureillh that, however, cares no more for the mixture, even though accompanied with sulphur, lime-water and tobacco juice, than if it were a gingerly dose of pure spring water. But rose‘buga, and the steel-blue grape-bugs, surren der to its power incontinently. Every farmer and gardener ought to have a supply of this soap on hand for use whenever necessary. CRACKED LIPS.- Avoid wetting the lips, especially when you are out of doors, and you will not often be troubl ed by their cracking. When the mis chief Is done, a good method of• treat ment is to touch them frequently with 'a piece of sulphate of copper- (blue vitriol) which will eansesontesmeriing but will cure them. It should be borne in mind that this salt is poison. when takri by any considerable quantity, but the small amount which couldtbe absorbed when used in this way is harmless. Those who are liable to cracked lips on slight provocation, may prntent them by using the' rose lip salve whiob is made by melts Sue . v its, wax in olive itud add ict, Whet 004 a few drops of oil o roses. It may be colored by tying a little "Monet in a cloth and - boiling it 18011 before adding to it.. Of course this salve must be stir red constantly while waling, slap the wax and oil will separate...„ gOOD ROLLA—The famous Parker House Rolls are made Ark the following described manner.: -Makes We , in two quarts of flour, and pour in one pint of curd Milk thathas been bollsd.. with a cap of betteireselbed In it. • Add a quarhar ofa cup of sugar, and tudf a cup of good yeast. .X.istr Itsitatid with. oat mixing_two or three_ hours.
