"THE ILLUMINATED WESTERN WORLD," is the title of a new weekly literary paper, recently started in New York, which is likely to proves formidable rival to the present popular weeklies.— The aim of the publishers will be to pro duce ,the best paper ;ofthe kind, and to this end will call to their aid contributors of acknowledged ability. Besides the high literary character of the paper, the publishers have introduced a novelty In the printing art, that of printing in oil colors of various shades. Each number will contain one or more of these colored illustrations. In producing the paper we learn that all of the colors are i secured at one impression—a feature we don't ex actly comprehend; but it certainly exhibits a wonderful combination of mechanical skill. HOW TO KEEP COOL.—The follow ing simple hints, from the Scientific Amer ican, are useful to remember during the warm weather of the present season : "Be sparing , in your diet,'which should consist principally of fruits, berries and vegetabled. Avoid everything of 'a greasy nature; also spices, condiments and sweets. Drink nothing but water. Chew nothing but 'hod, chew that well, but do not chew too much of it. Excess in eating is one of the principal causes of that lazy, listless, relaxing feeling experienced by so many persons in hot weather. Dress lightly, and change often. Wear nothing at , night which is worn during the day. Bathe the body every moraine with cool or cold water. Keep a clean conscience as well as a clean body and clean clothing, and don't get ex cited. If uncomfortably warm at any time, immerse be hands or feet, or both, in cold water for a short time, or let a stream of cold water run upon the wrists and an kles. This will cool the whole body in a hort time.' HAIL STORM.— The hall storm on Wednesdiy evening of last wet*, referred to in our last, covered about half a mile in width , - the hail-stones in some places-be ing as large as hen's eggs. It swept over the farms of John Kemper, Calvin P. Krlse, Abraham K rise, J. E. Plank, Hon. Edward McPherson, John Sochi, John F. Currens, Henry. S. Toot, Wm. Bigtutm, Joseph Witherspoon, and John Cunning ham, in Cumberland and Freedom town ships, doing more or lees damage to oats and corn. Mr. Bigham had his corn and oats badly cut up, the latter being so far destroyed that cattle have been turned in to it. Messrs. Toot and Witherspocin each bad a field of corn badly out up, while a field of oats belongirig to Mr. Cunning ham was so much injured that part of it cannot be cut. Mr. McPherson had a fine field of Italian oats seriously damaged. SPRINGS HOTEL—We are Indebted to Dr. G. D. THE BEST.—Tonics have of late years gained rapidly in public estimation, and are far more generally employed by first-class physicians than they once were. The rea son for this is that it is a generally establish ed fact that wholesome tonics used in mod eration, daily for years do not loose their, virtue, neither do they injure the system.— They act In fact like air and exercise, and not as "medicines," which are intended solely for attacks of illness. The inrraz Imurcuum, especially those of vegetable origin, all possess the common property of stimulating the appetite, strengthening the nervous system, and of impartingstrength. Women generally derive benefit frout-them even more than men, their system being more liable to debility and exhaustion.— We have again and again in our experience seen the good effects of tonics where the eyes had grown dim and the cheeks. pale, and the entire frame showed every indica tion of exhaustion, nervous suffering and debility. The best established bitters before the American-public are beyond question those of Dr. Stcever, and this is equivalent to de claring that they are the beat, since among the scores of really excellent bitters now current, a poor article has no chance of success whatever. The most ignorant per- son can tell at once by its effects, almost from a single dose, whether any bitters are good or bad. These of Stmver have been sold for thirty years, are composed of sixteen of the safest roots and herbs of a well-known tonic virtue, so skillfully selected and compounded with regard to their mutual effects, that it may be doubted whether any more perfect form of this med icine can be made. Thousands of persons are exposed to or afflicted with fever and ague, bilious ague or other results of malaria. Let them re• member that these bitters are as admirable in such cases, as for diarrhoea and cholera morbus, or any ordinary derangement of the stomach. Try them and be satisfied that they should be in the stores of every family, and the trunk of every traveler. It is a favorable feature in the advertise ment of the proprietors of, .Dr. Sttever's Tonic Herb Bitters, that' no claims are made that they will cure every ill that flesh is heir to. The weakest intellect can hard ly be imposed upon when told that this or that remedy will remove every form of dis ease in every stage, and yet we can not take'up the majority of journals without encountering an advertisement declaring that this or that medicine is a nostrum which is a perfect apothecary's shop, and a whole college of physicians in itself, rend ering all other cures useless. What is claimed for Dr. Stcever's Bitters is simply that they will act as a good tonic, and are capable of doing as much good as a prepa ration of bitter principle can. They will not cure incurable diseases, but they will often prevent a certain class of disorders from becoming incurable. The references and certificates issued in their favor are all true and honest, and of these there are hun dreds. From the editorial column of Forney's Phila. "Press :" _ FROM THE MEDICAL PROFESSION. LANCASTER, July 25, 1868. KRYDEE & Co.--Gentlemen : In reply to yours of the '2.2d inst., I would say that I have used Dr.litcever's Tonic Herb Bitters extensively in my practice during several years past. Ido not:hesitate to say that. I have found it to possess remarkable efficacy in cases of Dyspepsia, Indigestion, Loss of Nervous Energy, as well as Fever, and Ague, Diarrhoea, Headache and other dis eases proceeding from a disordered stom ach ; and especially has it proved of ines timable value in general debility of the system, when other tonic medicines have failed to produce the desired effect. Though reluctant to appear as recom mending any particular advertised medicine, a sense of duty to the public and the medi cal faculty will not allow me to withhold my testimony to the marital of the Bitters in question.
