JI; 1 7 111 : 251114 seCretini. or th,; - conneouela of -41gricu4tuos procured lait winter samples ot aixteen.uncles known in commerce as ' u fbrillisack" and submitted Oen to Proles , nor 8., W: Johnson, .of 'fate College, the well-irnown agricultural chemist, for analy ala Johnson received them from • Secretay Gold without names or labels, except numbers . for Identification, and .on receipt of the results of his analysis the Secretary has added to each its name and price, and lutaimblished the whole, for the benefit of farmers. • The report shows also how much it would cost- to buy in other forms the materials which give these fertilizers their value. Thus the tomes has before him all the in formation needed to choose the cheapest ' material for his purposes, whether it be a • patented or proprietary compound, or a mixture of his own manufacture. It appears that in every instance most of the substance sold consists of water or sand, or carbonate or sulphate of lime ; of some material, in short, which can be obtained at • very little expense. This is mixed with phosphates and nitrogenous matters in very diffeTrent proportions; but the really valua ble component parts are but a small propor tion of the whole. There is a strong rea son to suspect tbat some of the articles sold as fertilizers at high prices must' be pro ducts of deliberate fraud ; their value to the termer being in strange contrast with the priCe at which they are offered and adver tised_ The sample which proved the beat of all Is sold for $56 per ton; and contains actual fertilizing ingredients which it would cost the farmer $47 82 in gold, or more than S6G in currency, to buy separately In any com mon form. Next to this comes one, the useful parts of a ton of which are reckoned - to be worth $32 09 in gold, and Which is sold 34465 in currency. On the other Land, a popular article, sold at $2B per ton, is estithated to be really worth as a fertili zer not more than $2 33 per ton in gold, or but one-ninthsof its price ; and many other favorite articles of this class seem to deserve their reputation but little better, if the sam ples obtained by Mr. Gold are enough to sustain a final judgement. The trade in fertilizers in now very large and it is likely that some of those engaged in It are not scrupulous. It beoomes far mers to investigate with care the question, what is the best ? and -to drive from the Market articles in which a high standard of value is not , maintained. This is better than to invoke the aid of the state, with' Mr. Gold, whe thinks that other states ought to in** Maine, where a law has been passed requiring every package of this kind of goods to be marked with the percentage of valuable ingredients contained in it; -and latileting - pcnalties for inaccuracy. There seems to be no good reason why farmers cannot take care of themselves in this mat ter as well as other consumers, who are likely to be imposed on by . poor or adulter ated goods.- 7 -.Y. Y.-Post. ORCHARD GaAs& —Vfe have no know ledge of the value of this grass for fattening cattle ; but we think our dairymen-have yet to learn how valuable it is for their pur poses. It is sown through this section hard ly by one farmer in twenty, why we do not know, excepting that it would be an inno vation on the routine system of clover and timothy, which has - been , in vogue for a hundred years. Orchard grass is one of the very earliest to start in the spring. It not only comes forward early, , but it grows continuously through the season. No other grass- is so little affected by droulhs, or will bear with but injury heavy stocking. It seems to grow and keep green till almost New Year, and is.most emphatically a permanent pas ture, lasting many years, improving the soil by-the radiation of its numerous fibrous roots, and will crowd out daisies and most other vegetation. It wants to occupy the gronnd.solely. Orchard grass Is, however, the most un suitable ltif all grasses for the lawn or grass plot around the house on account of its rank growth and tendency to grow in bunches. Thisis'obnated in the field only by thick sowing, which should be not less . than two bushels per acre. For hay it should be cut (lithe young, and a good plan is to sow clover with it. This lasts & cou ple of years, when the orchard grass will crowd it oat and take possession. An or chard grass sod, on being ploughed up, is always found to be blabk and rich. It is a meliorator and improver of the soil. Practical Farmer. PLANT AN Oneulao.—No matter whether your bum is small or large, don't rest con tent mail you have au orchard of fruit -trees. "We do not advise farmers indiscriminate ly," says 274 Countryman, "to undertake to raise fruit for market. Each one should judge for himself as the feasibility of such an enterprise. But we do say to every far mer, Utile fruit, or try to do so, at least for the use of your own family. It will large ly pay in pleasure and in health, if you never sell a dollar's worth. - In selecting varieties, choose those kinds that usually do well in your locality. Deal, if possible,. with reliable fruit-tree dealers, rather than with agents who are strangers to you. And don't set out an orchard under the delusion that setting (rut the trees will be about all the work that will be necessary. In this day of many enemies to fruit and fruit trees, it may be said that eternal vigilance Is the price of fruit. Land devoted to fruit -trees need not be worthless to the owner. Slime valuable crops can be raised in the orchard abnost until the trees become old enough to bear; and - by the time they reach baring age, in this case, there will proba bly be a market close enough. But, as we mad above, if you never sell a dollar's worth of fruit, your °rebind assuredly will, if properly attended to, pay you andyonr fam ily, in health and comfort, for all your la bor and expense." A Sorsb CROP or POTATOES. —Such a one. says an exchange, . was raised in the Blue Ridge region of Virginia in this wise "The soil was a sandy loam, covered with_ a thick sod of many years standing. This sod was turned over 'bur inches deep, with a hem three-bone barebear plough. The seed was dropped in every other furrow, and covered, by the inverted sod Of-the succeed ing furrow. As soon as the Planting was _finished, light harrows were nut over the, audit* instil it was level and Smooth. At ter the potatoes Were well up, another har m/datives given, mid then one more work ing with cultivators mule as fine a - crop as we ever caw:. Now, here was a process dif fering very materially from that laid down as the proper one to be pursued in the ad tivatkmof potatoes. We give here, not as worthy of . units Sou , but simply as an ag ricultural fact-of more or less.value. The area cultivated was a large one—fifty acres —and time was wanting to give the ground a thorough prepantthm. The Secret of suc cess probably, la this instance, lwas a. loose bed, Aimed by the decaying sod, and an uncommonly good season. Fifty bushels of gypsum was the only manure used." A nasavet youth was itunetding to • patental-progenitor the °ideal of popping -the goestket.
