A handsome Gentle man's Gown was voted for, and the voting exalted a good deal of interest. On Satur day evening the students of the College made a rally for Rev. Dr. VALIUM:NE, Pres ident of the College, and carried off the prize. "STORING FOR A RISE."—We an nex a suggestive paragraph from the Millersburg (Dauphin County) , Itegister, illustrating the folly of keeping grain from market after Win ready: "We have been informed that a farmer iu this valley has stored away about a thousand bushels of wheat, for most of which be was offered almost three dollars a bustle), but wanting more, and in the hope of its rising in price, he hell on until this quantity ofgrain hits accumulated on his hands." THE FIRST THROUGH PASSENGER. —We see it stated that Israel S. Diehl, ICsq., late U. S. Consul to Java, was the first through passenger on the Pacific railroad. He *was ninety-one hours making the trip from Omaha to Sacramento, and witnessed .the driving of the "last spike" on the way. The festivities continued to a late hour,w hen the pro;ratinne closed with "Auld Lang Syne" as a parting ode. It was a pleasant re-union, and will long be remembered by all who participated in it. The energy and large hearted hospitality of the brethren of Cumberland Valley Lodge made the banquet, in all its ap pointments, a decided success. THE PAXTON FARM.—We clip from the SL Paul (Minnesota) Dispatch of the 19th 'lust., am account of the extensive farming operations of an "Adams county boy," which will interest many of his old friends : One of the prominent features of Red wood is the "Paxton Farm," four or five miles south-east Of this place. It is owned by J.. Wilson Paxton, late of St. Paul, a very enterprising gentlemen, and ono of the best citizens of the place. There aro 1,000 acres under cultivation, and it is de signed to "break up" almost the entire portion of the 8,000 acre tract as soon as possible. Air. Paxton has all told upward of 13,000 acres of land in this vicinity, with enough timber to give each purchaser a sufficient tract of wood land to supply the demand for building, feneing, (tc. He is preparing to set out soft maple and cotton wood groves on different parts of his lands, which in the course of four or five years will afford excellent protection against the wintry blasts. From the val ley of the Minnesota he is having a large quantity of soft maple seeds gathered with which to plant the low lands and meadow lands. He is also preparing to build a large number of farm buildings on his premises, to let to persons desiring to cultivate portions of the land on shares. This will be a great convenience to farmers of limited means, who will thus be ena bled to select "claim," and by renting cultivated land one person can acquire sufficient capital to equip their own limns quite comfortably. We have but paid a deserved compliment to Mr. P., because while he will make a handsome fortune fur himself, by his enterprise and liberal ity lie is and will continue to be a great benefit to the town and country. The custom of most men owning vast tracts of land is to let them lie unimproved to be advanced in value by the labor of email harmers in the vicinity. If such a aye tem were practiced in Witt case, Redwood would receive a great detriment. A fair article of coal has been found at Redwood, and a large body of superior mineral paint, which adds to the attrac tions of the region. _ bar Only 50 cents to hear the Germa nia. IL YORK SPRINGS ITEMS.—Messrs. Omet and Co., of Harrisburg, have leased the York Sulphur Springs. Everything about the premises has been fitted up, to make the place attractive and comforta ble for guests. We understand that nu merous applications have been made for rooms, and the probability is that the springS, season will bo unusually lively. The Odds Fellows Hall, in York Springs borough, is rapidly approaching comple tion, and when finished will be one of the finest buildings in the county and a credit to the Lodge erecting it. It is three sto the lower story to be occupied as stores, the second as a Town Hall, and the third as a Lodge room. We understand that soine line Barns are in course of erection in the district—one by Michael Leer in Huntington, and one each by George Smith and Mr. Bushy in La timore township. Mr. C. A. Peacock is patting up a line frame house in York Springs borough. The farmers have commenced to make hay, and there is a promise of a fine yield• SUDDEN DEATH.—Mr. Egbert Eckert, an old and highly respected resident of Mountpleasant township, this county, died very suddenly, on Saturday week. He had been to Gettysburg, and on his return home ward was attacked by a very severe cramp. He endeavored to reach his home as quick ly as possible, but was obliged to atop at Abe house of Mr. Alexander Young, some distance from his residence, and Dr. goel,, of Bonaughtown, was called in, who im mediately informed Mr. Eckert that he could do nothing for him, and that be must die, telling him at the same time that if he desired the aid of another physician, he should send for one. Dr. Hombaugh, of MdSherrystowu, was sent for, but before his arrival Mr. Eckert was a corpse. Deceased leaves a family and a large number of rela tives and acquaintances to mourn his sud den demise.—. DAVID WILLS, Chr'n Corn. of Arrangements Gettysburg, Pa., June 21, 1869. THE BEST.—Tonics have of late years gained rapidly in public estimation, and are far more generally employed by first-class physicians than they once were. The rea son for this is that it is a generally establish ed fact that wholesome tonics used in mod eration daily for years do not loose their virtue, neither do they injure the system.— They actin - fact like air and exercise, and not as "medicines," which are intended solely for attacks of illness. The nirrErt ?DISCIPLES, especially those of vegetable origin, all possess the common property of stimulating the appetite, strengthening the nervous system, and of imparting strength. Women generally derive benefit from them even more than men, their system being more liable to debility and exhaustion.— We have again and again in our experience seen the good effects of tonics where the eyes had grown dim and the cheeks pale, and the entire frame showed every indica tion of exhaustion, nervous suffering, and debility. The beat established bitters before the American public are beyond question those of Dr. Steever, and this is equivalent to de claring that they are the best, since among the scores of really excellent bitters now current, a poor article has no chance of success whatever. The most ignorant per son can tell at once by its effects, almost from a single dose, whether any bitters are good or bad. These of Slower have been sold for thirty years, are composed of sixteen of the safest riots and herbs of a well-known tonic virtue, so skillfully selected and compounded with regard to their mutual effects, that it may be doubted whether any more perfect form of this med. icine can be made. Thousands of persons are exposed to or afflicted with fever and ague, bilious ague or other results of malaria. Let them re member that these bitters are as admirable in such cases, as for diarrhma and cholera morbus, or any ordinary derangement of the stomach. Try them and be satisfied that they should be in the stores of every family, and the trunk of every traveler. It is a favorable feature in the advertise ment of the proprietors of Dr. Stcever's Tonic Herb Bitters, that no claims are made that they will cure every 11l that flesh is heir to. The weakest intellect can hard ly be imposed upon when told that this or that remedy will remove every form of d is ease in every stage, and yet we can not take up the majority of journals without encountering an advertisement declaring that this or that medicine is a nostrum which is a perfect apothecary's shop, and a whole college of phislcians in itself, rend ering all other cures useless. What is claimed for Dr. Stcevees Bitters is simply that they will act as a good tonic, and are capable of doing as much good as a pr epa ration of bitter principle can. They will not cure incurable diseases, but they will often prevent a certain class of disorders from becoming incurable. The references and certificates issued In their favor are all true and honest, and of these there are bun , dreds. From the editorial column of Forney's Phila. It is well worth the small sum asked for it, of iff.so per rnnum, with a premium. Published at 836 Broad way, N. 1. "PETERSON'S JISGAZINE, " for July is before us. The preeent issue is one of the best we have ever seen. A capital steel engraving, "The Romance of a Boarding School," with a laughable story by Ella Rodman, leads of; then follows a mam moth colored steel fasbiou plate, with five full length figures : and then we have num erous wood-cuts of new bonnets, bathing dresses, ctc., &n., besides a score of Ratterns for the work table, and also an alphabet for marking, printed iu colors. The literary contents, as usual, urn excel lent. Mrs. Ann S. Stephens continues her popular novelet, -Marie Antionette's Talisman." Frank Lee Benedict has also a charming tale : and "Married by Mistake" Is one of the best love stories we have read for a long while. Now is a good time to subscribe for "Prrzusos." Terms, /52.00 a year. To clubs, five copies for $B.OO, with an extra copy for a premium, and also the premium engraving, "The Star of Beth lehem." Specimen copies sent gratis to those wishing to get up clubs. Address Chas. J. Peterson, rAx; Chestnut St., Phil adelphia. CHI PHI CHAKETT.—We have re ceived the 2d No. of this sprightly issue, published annually at Lancaster Pa., by the Pennsylvania Chapter§ of the Chi Phi Fra ternity. It is neatly printed, and contains a roll of the membership of the various Chapters, with a number of items of special interest to the fraternity. Among the associate editors fur this year appears the name of J. F. Cressler, of Pennsylvania College. In the roll of members of the Zeta Chapter, we find the names of Hon. C. M. Duncan, Cliamix;rsburg,, class of 1856 ; A. J. Cover, Esq., Gettysburg, and Rev. J. M. 3fickley, McKnightstown, class of 1858 ; J. Finley Hoke, Gettysburg, cla,s of 1869 ; J. H. Sechler, Hanover, class of 1870. In the Theta Chapter, A. J. Cover, Esq., Gettysburg, J. F. Cressler, J. L. Hill, jr., F. W. 3lehaffey, J. M. Radebaugh, H. B. Sadder, Mervin J. McCreary, Samuel McC. Swope, Amos N. Titus, Win. C. Stce- VCr. GOODEY'S LADIES' BOOK.—We have received the July No. of this popular family magazine. It is an old favorite, and like good wine, seems to improve with age. The Signal, a tinted picture. Fashions Exchange, a fine wood cut. Fashions Extension sheet, thirty • nine engravings. THE "ItrirERSIDE MAGAZINE, "—for July, comes with a midsummer table of contents. "Snipe Shooting" is Gaston Fay's frenlispiene. "A Tale of the Sunset. Sea" is one of those pictured fairy poems ,by Miss Bishop, which readers of the "Riverside" hsve learned to look tor. Mr. Stockton comes with further adventures of the droll fairy ; the sketch of l"Joan of Arc" is concluded ; Mr. Benja min tells ns "How a Sail Boat is built, and rigged," preparatory to telling how it is nitmaged ; 'Papa's Story" containstnore of the inimitable pictures by children ; Nnitie Eyster describes an historic block-house on Lake Ede ; Hans Anderson slips In with, his latest, freshest story, and the' nuruher makes a fine show with its two dozen pic tures, large and small.
