Horn 0, soft be the sleep of the braves, who have died - In the bloom of their youth or in fresh manly pride ! In the heart of the nation their ashes are sown, Whose &nil shall be heroes, when ages have flown ! Untold be their glory, save here, where they fell, Let the graves of the martyrs their sacrifice tell, On these hills, the green altar that Heaven had built, Where the red-handed war priest their life blood has spilt. We scatter the flowers,—God's emblems of peace, And hope that when sinning and warring shall cease, Beyond the sad portal to glory,—the tomb,— Each soul, in God's twilight, forever shall bloom. GITTYBBURG, May 24th, 18G9. THE BIRSSING OF FREEDOM Awake ! and let your songs resound, And let your songs resound, For freedom's blessings here abound, For blessings here abound ; The battle's strife is ended, And peace with conquest blended lies freedom's land with glory crowned No more shall proud oppression stain, No proud oppression stain, Our nation's wide and rich domain, Our wide and rich domain ; Here freedom's gladd'ning story Shall ring in shouts of glory, While honor, truth and love shall reign CLASS EXERCISES.—There was quite a pleasant time in the College Campus on Saturday evening bash The members of the Senior Class, who will graduate at the approaching Commencement, have in augurated a custom, new here, but long ,established at some other colleges, of planting a "Class Tree," with special cer emonies. The "Class of 1869" selected a fine oak, which was planted on the main avenue in the campus near the entrance to the grounds, and on Saturday evening several hundred ladles and gentlemen re paired to the grounds, by invitation of the class, to witness the ceremonies. The ex emit; were open with prayer by Rev. Dr. VALENTINE, President of tne College, the Professors of the College and Seminary, Students, and Citizens, forming around the tree. Mr. F. R. FErrsnAss, of the Benior Class, made a pertinent introduc try address, and was followed by Mr. J. A. Clutz, as the "class historian," and Mr. J. W. Iltimrickonse as the "class seer," Who read credits productions, making a number of good points in the past history and probable future of members of the class. The exercises around the tree closed by the members of the class singing a parting ode. The visitors spent the eve ning pleasantly until 10 o'clock in prom enading the grounds, which were illumi nated with a large number of Chinese lan terns suspended from the trees and in the arbors. The college building was bril liantly illuminated, and the residences of Dr. Valentine and Professors Ferrier and Croll were throWn open to visitors. The Gettysburg Brass Band was present and gave some fine music during thcrevening. It was a novel and pleasant entertainment and we hope to me the custom thus inaug urated followed by future classes. Mark ed, order and decorum preValled during the entire eVening, and at 10 o'clock the crowd:had left, the lights were ex tinguish edand the campus perfectly quiet. In this connection we may remark that in the lastfew weeks, the college campus has been thoroughly fitted up, and mainly by the students who went actively to work, repairing the walks and flower beds, clean trig out the under bush, fixing up arbors, ' planting new treeg, ctc. We have never seen the campus in more attractive:condi tion. The same spirit of irnpiovment has extended to the Preparatory Department and the Theological Seminary, the grounds having been recently fitted up and im proved, presenting an attractive appear ance. NATIONAL ORPHANS' HOME STEAD.—We observe in the Philadelphia papers an appeal signed E. Soldiers' orphans are now ininaus:at the Homestead from eleven different Stites of the Union, while the institution has re ceived aid from neither the National nor the State government, excepting its charter from Pennsylvania." STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL —The La dies of the Presbyterian church propose to have in Agricultural Hall, on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, June S and 9, a Strawberry Festival, the proceeds of which are to be applied to church purposes.— From what we have heard and seen of the arrangements in progress, we have no doubt that the occasion will be an agreeable one to all concerned. It ought to be profi table. There will be music each evening. Admittance will be free. AID THE SOLDIERS' ORPHANS.— An appeal is hereby made to the patriotic Ladies of Gettysburg and elsewhere, to aid the Orphans of the National Ilomestead.— It is proposed to provide a large supply- of Fancy Articles and Relics of the .Bat tie, for the children to sell during the approaching Dedication of the Battle Monument. Many strangers visiting the place at that time will be glad to purchase some small relic or memento of the occa sion, and thereby aid this great national charity at the same time. In order to effect a larger sale, it is deemed best that the ar ticles prepared should not, be large or costly —but small, simple and convenient to car ry. Persons desiring to contribute articles suitable for the purpose, or any materials for the Orphans themselves can send them to Mrs. Hinton, at the Orphans' Home, where they will be gratefully received. PROGRESSING.—The work on the Springs Hotel and the Passenger Railroad, under the energetic superintendence of Dr. Smith, is progressing finely. The Hotel will be finished in a few weeks, and the Company expect to have -it furnished in time for the great gathering of July 1. We understand that a number of rooms have been already engaged.
