VELOCIPEDLSTS.—The Velocipede mania in Agricultural Hall has kept up during the, past week, a number of our young men practising daily—some of them having acquired considerable skill. On Thursiday night of last week, a Silver Cup was contested for and awarded to Mr. Reindoller aa the fastest rider, having made ten rounds of the hall, about a quar ter of a mile, in 1 minute 15 seconds. On Saturday night these were two contests—a Silver Castor for fastest riding, and a Watch Chain for the slowest. The Castor was won by M. R. Minnigh, who made ten rounds In 1 minute Hi seconds, and the Chain by John- Toy, who made one roun•l In 32 seconds. For several days the Velociliedists have been practising on the public streets, at tracting a good deal of attention. We un derstand that a party of young men in town have purchased four improved ma chines and will open a permanent practis ing school here. ' - POOR HOUSE ACCOUNTS.—The dis crepancy in the Poorhouse Accounts, to which our attention bad been called by a correspondent, and to which we refered last week, was occasioned by an error in the amount of Steward'asalary, which, we are informed. Should be $3OO, instead of $75 as published.. An examination of the origi nal copy, as certified to by the Auditors, Shows that the error exists there, the Stew, ard's salary being carried out at $75, in, stead of WO. Hence the mistake is not attributable to the "Printer." Wo are glad to find that these statements of the county receipts and expenditures are carefully scrutinized. The taw requires their publication for the information of tax-payers whose right and duty it is to examine them closely. We are under obligations to the correspondent who drew our attention to this discrepancy in the Poorhouse ACcounts, and which has elicited from the proper authorities a satis factory explanation. RAILROAD. MATTERS.—The Freder ick lepublican says the Frederick and Pennsylvania Line Railroad will certainly be built. The Company has called for the payment of the second instalment of stock, 20 per cent., on the 224 of May, and on the 25th propose to let 28 sections of the road, each over a mile in length. The Republi can has also this item : Go Amr.AD.—The people of Emmita.: burg are determined to build their Rail way to the Dunkard Church and connect with the Western Maryland near there, and also with the Frederick tit Pennsylva nia Line Railroad a little below; They will then push onward to Gettysburg, Bendersville, York Springs, Carlisle and Harrisburg, and form a junction with the great North and Lake Erre Route. This they are aware will make them thrive like a green l'ity tree in the month of Luna- Let Father McCloskey put his shoulder to the wheel and the thing can be accom plished. IMPROVED. —The Sabbath School of St. James (Lutheran) chnrch'in this place have re-modelled their School ro..m, and occupied it on last Sabbath,. The long pews have been removed, and the seats re arranged in blocks to promote the comfort of classes. The walls have .been papered In imitation of oak, and the furniture painted the same color, whild tastefully ar ranged mottoes adorn the wails. - This school is probably the largest in the coun ty, the Infant department alono number ing nearly 150. DFATH.—Last week a German, name) Conrad Cauffmsus, aged about 72 years, pro fessing to nail from Littlestown, stopped in HanoVer at a houseon Milt:more street, and asked fora bed, complaing of not feel ing well. He was thought to be under the influence of liquor, and remained in bed several days, sleeping moat of the time. He was not thought to; be seriously sick, but on Friday lie was found'a corpse. GOING FUR TH./lA.—Messrs. Watts maker ii.' Brown having spent toe put few months in getting up the largest and best stock of spring and summer garments ever offered in Philadelphia, are now busy as bees in disposing , of it at prices •so that every now and then an astonished customer has to . turn to his salesman to say, "You ain't fooling with me, are you I" This stock was got up with special refer ence to the country trade, and W. , B. are now "going for" the "custom era from out of town." But they needn't trouble themselves, for the country people of these part, with an eye to their own interests, are etre y "going for" the good clothes at eTslow pri at Sixth and Market Streets.
