He did for get his sword. That, a costly present from some of his admirers in England, lied been sent to the Richmond Armory for some repairs ; it was abandoned to the fire there. The last seen of this relic of the Southern Confed eracy was a twisted and gnarled stem of steel, on private exhibition in a lager beer salbon in Richmond, garnished with a err 'tificate that it gas what remained of Jeff Divis''sword, and that the curiosity might he purchased for two hundred dollars.— 'Whether tite retaller i or lager has yet Ms posea of his treasnre we de not -know, Mr. Davis was accompanied at the first stage of his flight by his family, some of his perSonal staff, aial three of his Cabinet : Gee. Breckenridge, Secretary of War; Mr. Ilenjatnin, Secretary of State, and Mr. Rea gan, Postmaster General. The party journ eyed without accident or adVenture to Dan ville. sitting mostly in moody silence as the train shrieked through the night that a few miles further was being torn by ex ploder:ls through whose fitful chasms of light Lee's army mareilkd as into imPene trable darknees. Arrived at Danville, M. Davis issued a proclamation ; out of place there, inaccessible to the army, and which would have been much more fitly made be fore he bud abandoned the post of danger in Richmond. But the exaltation of spirits he obtained after having passed the bound ary otT danger',Oand got on the side of sup posed personal safety, al not long survive. In a few days afterward came the news of Lee's sari ender : and the President and his party anain sadly turned their faces to the South ; u. Breckenridge being dispatched to Gen. Johnson's lines only to bring back to tlo: party on their route the sorrowful news of his surrender, and to increase the dismay of their flight. Mr.. Davis was the first to rally from this dismay. When he and his companions had left Richmond it was in the belief that Lee would avoid surrender lint a few days longer, and with the intention, as we have already sail, of making their way to the Florida coast sod embarking there for a foreign land. In the meditations of his Journey, however, through North - Carolina, the fugitive Pre sident appears to have conceived the alter nai ive , of venturing to the Sinathwest, within the teach of the forces` f Taylor and For rest, in the hope of reviving the fortunes of the Confederacy within a limited tchitory. He suggested the alternative to Gen. Breck inridge. as they travelled together, after the news of Johnston's surrender; they received only an evasive reply ; the latter not sitar in& his hopes, but unwilling to mortify 'them by a, candid declaration of opinion. There were also in ore party two or three of his EtatTollloors, and a few straggling soldiers, who still kept up some show of an escort. Mrs. Davis bad already prceLaled her husband to Georgia, and he now traveled slowly, 'and almost desolately, on horseback, having arranged that she should await him in the town of Washington. ' The cruelest neglect or insult of his mis fortune happened in passing through the small town of Griswoldville, the home of Alexander H. Stephens. _ 3fr. Davis, now an object of sympathy , worn, deserted; re- Alined two or three days in Grissvoldville he might tLere, at least, have expected that one who had been so near him In office as the Viee President of the Confederacy, would have visited him, to tender some hospitality, or to offer him honorable con dolence. Mr. Stephens never came near him; oever sent him a token or message, to his shame be it mentioned : for surely a mean nature is never mOrt! despicable than in its ft-eminent of misfortune, and its cow ardly refuge, on such occasions; in old re sentments or in Alfisll calettlationi.
