J. Miller, Cashtown; J. A. M., Illbiburg; and H. ' M., Gettysburg, all give the same an swers, viz: -72 hen eggs;s goof* eggs, anti -420 duck eggs. J. M., Cumberland, gives 1 74, 11 and 15 as the proportions; and W. C. bL u Highland, gives 76,14, and 10. J. A. M. Sends us his solution which may beef interest to some of our young readers, and we accordingly give it in full: DlLLimunn, Jan. lath, 1860. MESSRS. ED/TORS :—The following is an answer and solution to the problem that appeared. in the last issue at your pa per. I find however, that the question will admit of several answers. The one I have received by the 11103 t convenient method la as follows : 72 hen eggs, 20 duck eggs, and 8 souse eggs, which, as will" be readily seen, exactly proves. If he had bought all the eggs at 1 cent apiece, theanawer would be immediately conceived; but he bought them at }, 2 and 8 cents apiece. On one hen egg, therefore, there is a gain of; cent, and on one duck eggs loss of 1 cent. To equalize this we take 4 beat eggs and 2 duck eggs, In the same manner, on one goose egg there is a loss of 2 cents ; therefore to make it again equal we take 4 more ben eggs and 1 goose egg. This would =lce the num ber of each 8, 2 and 1. Bat it •Is evident that the number of each is greater, since there must be 100 •eggs. We can now multiply the above numbers, 8, 2 and 1, by any number that will make neither of them greater than 100. We will take 8, as it is the most convenient : 8x8..431 -- . 2 x B=l6 1 x 8-- 8 The numbers are now 61", 16 and 8 ; but by adding them together we find that they amount to but 88 eggs, which is deficient 12 eggs. We must now dispose of the re mainder proportionally. By the condi tions of the question the number of lien eggs is to the duck eggs as 2 to 1, or, what is the same thing, as 4to 2. The number of duck eggs to be added, therefore, is one-third of 12 which is 4 and the number of hen eggs, which is two-thirds, is 2 times 4 which is 8. 64 Sc 8-72. 16 dz, 4 20; 72 hen eggs, 20 duck eggs and 8 goose eggs. If the above solution is not correct, I will try it again. Lt P., Ileitilersburg, send us three solutions of the problem, viz: Hen eggs, 72-36 74--37 70-35 Duck !' 20 -40 15--30 25 —5O Goose " 8 --24 11-33 5--15 100 100 100 100 100 100 With the above, the following Problem is subaiitted A merchant has but four weights,, and can weigh any umnber of pounds from one up lo forty, and the fuur weights .weigh Just forty pounds.
