The Good Templars are Temperance or ganizations, and we understand that the Lodge in Petersburg is in a flourishing con dition, large in numbers, embracing excel lent material, and influential. _ MISS CROUCH'S LECTURE, on Tues day niiht, drew out t a fair audience. Miss C. belongs to the class of "strong-minded" women, who fault the present dispensation of things—don't believe that - the special prerogative of woman is baby-tending and household managenient--dispute the right -of the "lords of creation" to monopolize political power, anddemand that the right of voting, holding office, Mairing laws, and -general participation in governmental and busine as affairs, be thrown open to compe tition, irreespective of sea. Selecting as her theme "Wisdom and Folly,'; the lec turer made a number of sharp points on the fashions and follies of the day, both.sexes coming In for a full share of sarcasm. The present system of female education, more especially the social aspect of it, was strongly denounced. Miss C. is a pleasant talker, and upon the whole made a favors- Flo-impression. Although the amount involved was mail, the case involved legal principles of a itodd deal of importance, and the time of the Court was occupied for nearly two days In the citation of authorities and a* argue ment of legal points. • Plaintiff while in toxicated deposited ffP. with a men 'named allegekto be a bar keeper .for defendant. Meal - tin absconded the same night, with the and Puff, brought suit to recover the amount thus deposited. The proof went to show that McClain was not employed ai! bar-keeper, but was a boarder in the house, ana occasionally tended the barip Mr. Houser's absence. On the evening 'when Tully made the de posit, Houser was absent and McClain had access to the bar, the keys of the drawer, and sold .liquor to Tully and others. A number of points', were submitted to the court by counsel on both sides, involving the responsibilities of Inn- keepers.— Judge Fisher, in answering these points ruled in subs tance that Inn-keepers are responsible to guests for money oLgOods deposited with employees or agents, or brought to the house ; that if McClain was permitted to have access to the bar and by his acts give out the impression - to strang ers that he was an employee, the land lord was liable for the money deposited with McClain —unless the Jury were satis fied th a t Tully knew that McClain was not the bar-keeper, and with such knowledge deposited the money with him as an indi vidual; and not as bar-keeper or on the credit of the house. The defence under took sa to sati the Jury but failed, as their verdict was for Plaintiff. The following eases additional to thoen reported last week, were disposed of : Michael Hoffman vs. Francis J. Wilson. —Ejectment. The case was tried at November term, but the Jury failed then to agree, and it was put down for trial lass week. It occupied the balance of - the week, and late on Saturday night the Jury rendered a verdict for the Plaintiffs. INGENIOUS AND SERVICEABLE ARTICLE.—During a recent visit to the Wareroom of Col. C. EL BUEHLER, oppo site the depot, on Carlisle street, our atten tion was attracted to a combined "Press and Strainer," recently patented- by H. Littlefield, of Boston, which ought to be in every family. Yankee ingenuity, which is generally supposed to be equal to any required effort, has been to work to get up a Press and Strainer for every day use in the Kitchen and Dairy, and the result is this little machine, which by a very simple arrangement of assorted meshes and lever, can be used equally well for preising.and 'straining lard, bil low, grapes, currants, tomatoes, apples, pumkins, squashes, berries, jellies, Jams, dutch or curd cheese, soups, indeed any thing that requires mashing and straining. It seem' to be the very thing needed in every family. The beauty of it is that it is a light portable machine, weighing five or six pounds only, and can be set on the pantry shelf ready for daily use, or stow ed away in the cup-board, occupying but little space. ' There are two sizes, one ceet lug $2, the other $3. We advise house keepers to examine the article. Col. 13usui-En is the Agent for this county. ANOTHER..—We don't know that there is any limit to Yankee inventive genius. We have been shown another ingenious instrument, called the "Carpet-strecher and Tack-driver." It is about the size of an ordinary tack-lifter, but has a claw for stretching carpels and a magnetized rod of iron adjusted in a socket with a spring. The magnet lifts the tack, adjusts it in -the socket and in one operation the.oarpet is streched to its position and the tack driven home. A child or blind man can use'it, and it costs but:SO cents. Col. BUERiaB is also Agent for this article. BOLD KITRDER.—A few weeks ago, C'HannEs Si. RoGERS, a prominent and respectable Nilsen of New York City, was brutally murdered in front of his remidence about 7 o'cßock in the morning. A color ed boy passing along the street saw the murder,- and states that two men came along the opposite side, when the smaller of the two, deliberately taking ofl'his over coat and blinding it to the larger, crossed the street to where Mr. Boozes was—the larger remarking, "Jim, don't do it."— The villain grasped Mr. ROGER'S gold watch and chain, and he resisting, the as sailant drew a knife and plunged it into Mr. R., causing his dGath some hoPrs at ter. The villains then made their escape. All this took place in broad day light, in is fashionable part of the city, and notwith standing the offer of heavy rewards by the Mayor and family of the deceased, the detectives have thus far been at fault. Somd 20 or SO not d characters, going by the name of "Jim w, and answering to We description given by the colored boy and Mr. Roams, have been arrested from time to time, but in most cases have proved alibis. No murder in New York for years has excited so much feeling. The high character of the deceased—the gmes place and circumstantial' of the murder—make it peculiarly audacious. The articles need not necessarily be con fined to one subject; the greater the range of topics the better.
