If proper' care is taken, this may be avoided. The principal difilculty.results from allow ; big the mud to remain oa for a long time or from the manner in washing it off, and we will give a few hints, about keeping har ness and carriages in good order. L Those; who have the care oflarnese need not be troubled to prevent it from getting wet, for leather, if in good condition. is seldom injured by water. Care should be taken, however, to hang up the harness, _ and not allow it to be thrown into a heap on the floor, to lie and mould, instead of dry ing off. The leather should be kelit fairly oiled, but the harness should first be taken apart and washed with soft water; and the oil may be rubbed In while the leather is moist, care being taken that the applica tion is thorOughly made. For this purpose neats-foot oil is considered the best. If th e harness also needs blacking, a ilittlo lamp black should be added to the oil, and the • rubbing should be continued until a white cloth may be used in wiping off the har ness without beinikelled. Leather varnish should never be 'need cm harness, 11l clean ing the plating, rotten atone or whiting may be used, but generally an - occasional tubbing off with a woolen cloth will be all that is neceisari. The Ira thing to remember in cleaning s carriage is that the mud which may ac cumulate L not-to be taken off by rubbing ; if it is dry, (and it should never be allowed Fe become so if it la possible to prevent it,) soakit well end let it get soft, so. that by throviing On water it will run off. r the cirri* has thus been thoroughly rinsed of and all the corners cleaned out, the Work nisi be finished with a pail of clean cold water and a good sponge% if the sponge Is not clean it will scrawl the paint. cifter washing, "a pieete of chamois ghontd be used to rub all the paint and polished work until it is thoroughly dry. It is hardly necessary to say that; no one who cares at all for a nice looking Carriage will ever leave dlrtin the corners. There need be no fear of washing a"Car riage too often : if washed every time it is run out, and dried well with a chamois, there will generally be "less trouble about the cracking -of the. paint. • But the care of a awls& does not end with the washing. A suitable seem to keep it In is arrays a very imreetant. consideration. A coach house that is not *Orly ventilated, or In a damp place, where steam of any kind passes througbit, will, in a short time, fur..- Dish the opportunity for destroying the best painted carriage ever made. and in these cases it is too common to attribute the fault to the - palter. —.Frarness aficr r riage Journal. PROM) OP FAUWNG.—At a recent dis cussion at the I,Tew York Farmers' Club in reference to the cash money profits of farm ing, It seemed to be gimeral conceded that the business failed to yield seven per cent. on the capital invested. We were some what surprised that none of the debaters thought of giving the farm credit for the three great necessaries of life--house rent, table supplies and fuel. Viewed in this light, farming isle safest and best invest ment that can be made of capital. Take, for instance, $20,000; let it be judiciously Invested In a moderate amout of land, and all the snick and implements ne c essary to its succOsful cultivition. The , proceeds from each en inveatiaent will gupport, a family in a degree ,o comfOrt, And even luxury, that would cost siy.or itern thous and a year here in New York and where is the safe, honorable mercantile or me chanical pursuits that willyleld six thous and on a twenty thousand dollar invest ment ? The profits of farming except in a rare instane, will be found to diminish as We extend oar operations beyond what Is requisite for the comfortable support g_ a filthily, and this may be done as well Jon a 'hundred as on a thousand acres of land; end this is a strong argument for the subdivision of the great leaded estate of the BoUth..-- Ttint; Field,,an4 Fctrin; - - WHIM TO SELL GRAIN.—When to sell grain' is assubject of much interest to Dinn ers. Whetheisto sell now, or to “h•ld over," whether wheat will be worth more next month or next spring than it is now, are questions which have puzzled the brains of many farmers.
