DARN - BETRNT.--On Friday night, Dec. 4, a barn belonging to Mr. Ja.mEs BRADY, in iitichanan Valley, was detitroy ed by fire, with all its contents. consisting of hay, straw, dm. The fire itt_supposed to have been caused, in some. accidental way, by a party stealing chickens. ,The building was insured in the Mummasburg Company for s4oo.—Compiter. COLD SNAP.—Winter has fairly set in at last. During the past week the mer cury his indicated a steady determina tion to keep, below freezing point, occa sionally looking down closely to zero.— The streams and ponds are tightly frozen up, and the youtig folks say the skating is "splendid." We notice by our exchanges that the present cold snap , is general. At the West it is felt with great/severity. At Kansas city • Friday and Saturday were the coldest days for several years, the thermometer reaching fifteen degrees be low zero. Navigation on all the Western rivers IS closed. SALES.—Samuel Eyster has sold his farm, in Butler township, to Ezekiel Lau, of Read inglownshlp, 150 acres, for $7,500. Geo. Moses Hartman has purchased the in terest of Esther McKinney, deceased, in the McKinney property in Mountjoy township, being the - undivided one-third of 11:2'aeres, for s96i. H. B. Cromer has purenased -the interest of Andrew Mc- Kinney in the same, the undivided two thirds, for $2,256. Tuesday evening, G. A. TOWN SEND, Esq., delivered his lecture on "The Pcnneylvania Dutch," in Agricultural Hall, with a fine audience. The Lecture we presume, disappointed many i who from :he theme announced, may have ex pected to be entertained with a Ind iatuti burlesque of tee habits and customs of the Pennsylvania 'Germans. Instead of this, We Lecture was a scholarly anffin the ma billiticritn hutting discussion of the ori gin and peculiarities of the various sects tents between the Blue Mountains and the Delaware—the Tunkards, Mennonites, Moravia s, ite,,—with some fine descrap lions oftirnral life and /wanes as presented to the tourist in visiting the garden Opts of the Slate lying east of the Susquehatut. Of course, the subject presented a lair field kir humorous illustrations, and the Lecture was made to sparkle with them. The seine what extravagant bht humor ous story of Phil Shute's troubles with U. States revenue detectives, intended to illustrate the capacity of the German for Lager beer drinking, brought down the house: Although Mr. Townsend's artic ulation and delivery areAtnlty, rendering it difficult at times to Lib understood, the lecture on the whole was a success, end 4,110 of the best we have had. Tuesday last, about .noon, (sea . town ...yas startled by the cry of rip . * . 1" A dense volume of smoke roll ing up from the western end of the town indicated thedir„ection of the ft - e, which proved to be the' Carpentershop on the lot occupied by Mr. fikeorge Chritzman,ou West Middle street . Being' frame, with a good deal of cotutostible material, the buildin'g was soon envelloped in flames, and in less than half an Jlour was in ruins. The . fire communicated td the Shed and Stable of Mr. William Z. Little‘- adjoining, and for a little while it looked .as if all the neighboring stables would ,go. The only hope of checking the pro gress of, the fire was by tearing down Mr. ii ? itt.l,,e's stable, which, with the aid or axes, has4s, and ladders, was accomplish c../, and o suffisi, ent space thus cleared be tween do burning 4top and otlier stables to save them. The Carpenter Shop was occppied . by Mr. William Chriteman, who, we regret to say, loses about $OOO lu tools .and mate rials, without any insurauce. The Shop itself was insured lathe Adims County Company for $lOO, and the Stable of Mr. Little in the same Company fora like amount. As Mr. Chritzman and his hands had gone to dinner, it is not knowit. how the fire occured, but the supposition is that fire from the stove was in some way communicated to shavings on the floor. GOV. MENT.—The anstpul.,olooo4 the Board of Maul s! 01thelkoldler t e al Cerneter7 was Whist Wilika*MOOlt, the 9th inst., Esq., of this plinsty' presiding. Berrie were made. by - Mr. Wills, President, and Hon. S. Treasurer; and by . Various _otinunittees,. exhibiting the financial condition of the Assictistkm and therm:grew of the work. The Monument, which has been! deiced by the breaking of one of the statues in Italy, will be Completed early next Spring. The Monument will be of New England white granite, 65 tilt high; the statues of Italian marble. The top stat ue represents the Goddess of Liberty, and Is 10 feet 6 inches high. It was cut in Italy under ths - superintendence of Ran dolph Rogers, and is now on the grou,nd at Gettysburg. The shaft of the monu ment is of white granite, and is already Cut and ready to be ssipped., from the quarries at-Westerly, Rhode Island. Two of the statues, "War" and "History," are finished and were shipped from Leghorn on the 20th of .November. The other statues, "Peace," and "Plenty," are in the hands of the sculptor in. Italy, and will be shipped early in the spring.— These will be placed around the four pedestals or corners of the monument. It was determined to have the final con secration ceremonies on the Ist of J uly next, and committees were appointed to make the necessary arrangements, which will be on an extensive scale, and worthy of the occasion. The Executive • Committee :Were in structed to inquire into the expediency et erecting an observatory or tower in the cemetery grounds, and, if-they deem it advisable, to procure and mint to the Board plans and estimates of the cost of such observatory. This, by the way, Is a capital idea, and we hope it will be adopt ed. An observatory on the rising ground the rear of the cemetery lot, would give visitors a commanding view of the entire wattle-field. The want of it lies been fre quently remarked, and we feel assured that the Board could do nettling • which wouid give more general satistatition. The Committee cuariked with the duty 'of securing the assent of We Statue repre sented iu the Board to a transfer or the Cemetery to the General Government, re ported that all States which acted on the subject had responded favorably, and that the other States would doubtless concur ALI time to make the formal transfer nest July, atter the consecration. Mr. Russell, Treasurer, reports the amount received during the year, includ ing balance ou hand at previous settle ment, $14,1123.50; amount paid-opt during the year on monument, lodge house, sc., t 13,138.03, leaving a ca-h balance of *l,- 404.87, besides $22,500 invested in U. S. 5-20 Bonds. `there has been paid on the contract for the monnnuient *35,000,1,w:- 14 $12,500 to be paid on final completion of the work. This would leave a eUrplus of about $ll,OOO in the hands of the Board, to appropriate to the proposed observatory, or such other improvements as may be deemed best. Mr. Wills was re-elected President, and Mr. Russell Treasurer, and the Board ad 'journed to meet in Gettyaburg on the 30th of June next.
