Now 1614 it Iseduty as - well as a pri vilege* the fruit growers of Adams coon ty.to apeak. thtough the columns of yohr Journal, and thereby exchange views, give experience, 4c:-, and thus become more funnier with ibe cultivation of that delici ous fruit, if there is any such thing as cul tivating it successfully. There may be, Many a bill side and wood in the South Mountain region where peaches might suc ceed, yet.we had no good illustration of it, even at Benderaville,- which may be taken 'Libel center of that favored region. We . doubt whether the writer of that article can show us a single instance of a peach orchard in that•section that has grown anything like half a crop, three years in five, and I believe =safe in saying not a single orchard can he pointed out in which the trees have con tinued healthy for a space of five years af ' ter they have arrived at a bearing - age. In the face of all this the assertion is made that they can be miide a profitable crop, without giving us a single, instance r of uniform suc cess, or telling us how we. may succeed. Will "C" go a little farther and tell us how. x. A SETTLED POLICY ON TUN FARM. The whole secret of the successful farmer often lies in his baying a fixed plan of op eration's. Multitudes have no plan but to meet their immediate necessities and make money by the easiest and seemingly short eat methods. If wool bringe high prices, they will gradtially give up dairying and work Into sheep, with the expectation of Making their fortunes. . If wool and mut ton raising for a time does not pay, they sell their flocks at a great sacrifice. If hops are sixty cents a pound, they invest in hop poles and kilns for. drying, end ; expect sudden wealth, If, when their yards come into full bearing, the prices fall off one-half or more, they are disgusted, and ready to plow ; up their yards, concluding the business will not pay. ,There are men who are always taking up ts.good Wirt a little too late to make money by it. The farmer cannot af ford this continual change. His business is lees speculative than any other, and, after providing for the wants of his " family and . stock, he should give his attention steadily to the production of a few animals, crops, or other prodgcts, on which he gan rely to raise money. Any branch of farm industry, steadily followed, will be found profitable. Dairying, in a year of short grass, might not pay very well. But the years of drought are exceptions, and the man who makes _jet-rate butter or cheese will find them a reliable source of income. Where a special ty is made of some one crop, it is particular ly important that be should follow it steadi ly. Miff raising of hops or of tobacco re quires'fixtussithat are useless in any other branch of farming, and the change of crops involves a considerable loss of capital. Be sides, we are always learning In a business to which we give habitual attention, and this knowledge is as much a part of our capital as the money invested in tools and buildtnga. If a man should make potatoes his leading crop, he would study to lessen the cost of production, and would resort to devices in the preparation of the seed and soil, in the use of manures, and.in cultiva tion, quite unknown to the farmer who pur sues a careless style of husbandry. 'He could raise, potatoes cheaper than his neigh bbrs, by marns 471 his improved methods, and if he sold at the same prise, make more money. Whatever branch of farming you follow, stick to it, if it is moderately pro fitable. Lay your plans far ahead, and be prepared for the exceptional years, when large profits come from high prices, or losses from unfavorable seasons. A mixed hus bandry is always the safest, and is not at all inconsistent with the cultivation of com mercial crops, as tobacco, hops, flax, onion seed, or vegetable seed of - any kind, garden vegetables for market, fruits, etc. The in troduction of these requires close calcula tion, definite plans, and thorough business nnosegeatent, If success be , attained. A merfean Agriculturist. Moan Rusts, Fnurrs.,--We are convinced that farmers generally do not pay enough attention to the cultivation of small fruits. We do not advise any one to abandon the cultivation of large fruits, as they are call ed ; but then, in many partsof the country, apples, pears, and peaches have become such uncertain crops that it, will not do for the flamer to depend upon them alone for his fruit. Every farmer should lave his table continually supplied_ with small fruits and berries fresh, from the time c • : . „ become St for use to the end of the seas : 11/ ” for blackbetriea—zi period of at least three months—with enough besides to preserve to supply his family the balance of the year,— Currants come first, and they are followed by gooseberries, strawberries and raspber ries and.blackberries. The inducements to the cultivation of these are, that they can be successfully cultivated, in nearly every sec. lion of the country ; they are hardy, and they seldom fail, with proper cere, to make large yields. A farmer may labor for years to - bring apple and peach orchards into sue - cesaful bearing, and may in the end find that he has received no adequate return for his labor and expense. On the other hand, any farmer can, with ordinary skill and atten tion, and but little cost, - in two years have a full supply of the small fruits and berries.— Farmer's Alumnae. A Rawmummy!
