His injuries were not otherwise serious, and he is doing well. KILLED.—We understand that ABS), tom Comuo, of /Senalien township, was killed about two weeks ago in Georgetown, D. C., in a fracas with a man whose name we have not. heard. We have looked in vain in our exchanges for particulars of the sad event. Mr. Conrad belonged to the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry, during the war, and had personly served three full enlist ments in the regular army, He was on his way to Washington, to try to receive admission into the Government Institution for old "regulars," and, stopping at night in Georgetown, became involved In the con troversy in which he lost. his life. The great secret of his suc cess as a vocalist lies in his unaffected style, Sue expression, stimirable enunciation, combined with a voice of great sweetness, purity and power. THE VALUE OF ADVERTISING.— The Cincinnati Commerciathas an excel lent at tide on the nianagetnentof news papers, from which we copy the following passage in relation to advertising: "The true theory is to charge enough for advertising to compress it into a limited space, and devote the greaterporticm of the printed sheet to reading matter, that the Journal may possess the elements of popu lar interest, and be widely circulated, and in proportion as it is circulated the space becomes valuable to the advertiser. A. great many advertisers do not seem to understand this, plain as it may seem. They see only: one or two copies each of a newspiper,'End their personal sight being satilled, they forget that while one jour nal has a hundred thousand readers daily, toe other has perhaps but ono or two thousand. 'Why, you charge more for tue insertion this notice than other papers do,' is a reinark which we are accustomed to hear. To'be sure 4 we charge more. We plead guilty, and are rather proud of it. The only reason in the world why we do it is tlr,t our space is of more value than that of the other papers. We have a lar ger circulation and more readers than others, and hence higher charges are our right." This hi the very essence of gOod sense and what is more, it is specially applicable to the STAR AND SENTINEL. Our paper being the largest In the Congressional district, we have consequently more apace than our neighbors, and while doing jus. lice to advertieers we can devote a large portion of our columns to leading matter —thus making the paper attractive, and securing a circulation largely in excess of that ever attained by any paper in the county. h.tpreov,r, uy excluding large cuts and unseemly stereotypes, and classifying adverthe ments tin der appropriate heads, advertisers are all treated alike, getting the space they pay for, none being buried up or hidden in a maze of out, andish cub.. To the adver tisers they are accordingly of greater val ue, both by reason of arrangement and large circulation. We do not know that oar advertising rates are higher than our neighbors ; we do know that an adver tisement In the "STAE AND SENTINEL," reaching weekly at least eleven thou-and readers, is worth a goo,d• deal more than the same advertisement appearing in a paper of one-half or one-fourth our cir culation.
