Stewart, .E 8.7., Chairman of the Grant Committee My Dear :Mgt—When Frank P. Blair, who had nn claim whatever upon the Dem °cretin patty, was nominated in Tammany ttad, iwithattelt shouts of applause, Just after pmehdming thit " We must slave a ' who will trample into dust" the laws of Conixess, and when four Rebel Generals made the chief ratification speeches In New York, my attention, as a War Dem ocrat, was arrested by this remarkable exhi bition. Since then I have careful noted the 'ex pressions of Southern journals, and the speeches of Southern polititcans, feom Wade Efampton, on his return .. to Charles -- n, to the recent manifesto - of B. H. Hill, and I find that every leaning Rebel in the confederacy regards the expected election of Seymour and Blair as a complete Andi . catit of the rebellion, and as certain to res the South to every right which she bad before the war, including the "tramp ling into dust" by military feet, the .pro ciamation of freedom and the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution. This contest presents a well defined issue between the friends and the enemies of our Government. I clot conceive how any intelligent man, who does not wish the Rebebi returned to power, the nation's faith violated, its name dishonored, its prosperity destroyed, its patriots insulted, and the "Lost Cause" restored, can vete against Grant. In my judgment, the election of Seymour and Blair would forthwith confuse and paralyze our businesk and reduce the nine of our property one-half, To aid in averting this calamity, I send yon here . NOM $20,000, which I give to be Used in the election of General Grant in such manner as you and the - committees with whom you act may think best. And I remain yours, very truly, . EDWARDS PIEREEPOINT. AN ANALYSIS OF THE CHARACTER OF GENERAL GRANT. Judge James Sloan, of Ohio, In a speech delivered in Cincinnati on the 28th ult., presented an estimate of the character of General Grant,. He said Grant was not a genius ; neither was .Washington. The speaker thought the plain, earnest, common sense man of more use than the genius. He said Grant was not an orator. Ho had done better than make great speeches. He had "thought great thoughts and great deeds." Ae said Grant was no politician: He was something better than a partisan ; he was a national man. He spoke of Grant as a prudent man ; •aa a man of self-reliance ; as a man of shrewd observation ; as a man of sound judgment and pertinacity of purpose; as a an of great energy aid activity; as an honest man, a modest man, and as coin ing of "good stock." We quote the con cluding paragraph: 'Snell, gentlemen, as I have described him, is Ulysses S. Grant, a man of good, ,itolid sense, and useful and thorough ac quirements; a man of plain and-direct but shrewd Raid far-seeing mind ; a quiet and taciturn-man, but one who speaks, when called upon to speak, directly to the point In a clear, forcible and fitting, - though not ornate, or even very elegant language; a modest and retiring man, who never thrusts himself upon the public attention, but one who, being called upon to act, acts with promptitude and vigor, 'asking no favors and shrinking from `no responsibilities;' a man of activity and energy, without bluster or parade ; of firmness, without obstinacy ; of self-reliance without vanity or presump tucusness; a man of quick perceptions, rapid reasoning powers, sound judgment and prompt decision ; a man who owes nothing to favoritism, but who, 'by dint of merit,' has 'achieved greatness,' and who, notwithstanding the eminence to which he has risen, has not become dizzy-headed, but is the simple-mannered, loiel-headed man he was before, and who walks the toppling mountain height of fame with the same firm step, undavyled eys, calm, clear, steady mind and modest bearing for which he was noted in the humble and obscure lowlands of life. Possessing the qualities I have enumerated, Grant, if elected, cannot be other than a safe President" OPERATIONS OF :TUE KLAN IN TEXAS. GALVESTON, Texas, Oct. 10.—On the third of this month a Republican meeting was-announced and held at Jefferson, in this State, at which Geo: Smith, a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, spoke. The same night he was attacked by a band of rebels, and would then most certainly have been killed had it not been for opportune arrival of the military, who protected him. For protection he was taken tb the jail, in which at the, time were also a number of freedmen. - A guard was placed around the jail building, commanded by Major Curtis. On the night of the 6th the - gutird was as saulted and disarmed by a mob of disguised men. The jail was broken open, and Mr. Smith and two freedmen - ,in their, endeavors to escape were murdered. Their bodies were literally riddled with bullets. An other freedman, making three in all, was also shot dead.. Mr. Smith was, a young merchant from New Y.Ork, in which city ho was born. During the war he served in the Union army, How To Snexi ovi TROUBLE. —Set about doing good to somebody ; put on your hat and go and visit the sick - and the poor;— inquire into wants, and minister to them ; seek out the desolate and oppressed, and tell them of the cousoladons of religion. THE GREAT Zingari Bitters. TOTS WONDERFUL REMEDY was discovered and introdueed about twenty pare ago by Dr. 8. Obeopeau,an eminent Egyptian physician. ILS had long seen and felt the want of some remedy which would 'strike at the root of disease. and so prevent lunch °fate suffering which the human fami ly's"' then compelled to endure. This great question was presented to his mind every day in vivid colors as le moved among th e sick muddying, and observed the inefficiency of nearly all the remedies then in use. Thus he was led to think and experiment; and after ten years' study and labor ' he presented to his fellow-man the wonderful Zingari Bitters. The effect at this preparation in the pre vention and cure of disoas• was so marvellous and astonishing, that the most Battering marks of royal ! favor ware bestowed upon him who discovered It name was placed upon the Roll of Nobles, and a gad medal with the following Inscription—Dr. 8. akutopaus, the Public Benefactor—was presented to him by the Viceroy. The preparation has been used In several epidemics of cholera, both as a preventive and curative mew. are, and with such great success, that it has been in. troduaed Into nearly all the general hospitals of the old world. The old saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, applies with marrellows force to cholera, and therefore any remedy that will protect as against this terrible disease mould be freely and persistently used. All pathologists now agree that the cholera poison acts on the system throughrhe blood, and :bat any combination which acts on the excretory organs, and keeps them in working order, mast prevent a sufficient accumulation of the poison to exert its terrible effects on the organiam. This is true not only of cholera, bat of nearly all other maladies, especially the different forma of fever. The Zingari Bitter. is just each a remedy as the above conditions require. It acts on the organs of excretion and secretion, keeping up a perfect bal ance between them. Thin Bitters is composed en tirely of roots and herbs, so nicely concocted that every organ Is acted upon nd put in tone. Its taste is pleasant and Ito effect. prompt andlasting. Numerous cases of the diseases have been cured by fri Cholera, Diarrhaa, Digamk t ry, Scrofula, Typhoid and Typhus lever, lever, Ague, Nervous Debility, Anaemia, Female Irregularities, Dyspepsia, Flatulency, Colic, Ac.
