We notice that Dr. Gipsort P. &arm, of Balti more, an eminent naturalist, some years ago prepared an interesting account of these insect" based ; on _close obpertatien during their last vlsit, seventeenYearsaga. Among her things he says "they commenotide positing their eggs about the 15th of June. You may see a locust attached to a limb or twig, and it will not fly away as you ap proach. Look closely, and you will see it excavating a hole in the limb with its curl-. ons ovipositor. Watch it closely, and as soon as it has inserted the ovipositor com pletely into the limb, take hold of theinsect, and gently but quickly draw it forward, and apply the point of the ovipositor to the palm of the hand, when you will see two eggs ejected into your hand in quick succession. They deposit two eggs at each insertion of the ovipositor, and generally five to ten pairs in each place on'tbe limb. She then goes to other places on the same limb, or to some other limb, and repeats the operation, till hhe has laid about 400 eggs. The eggs are white, or pearl color, about the 12th of an inch long, and about_one sixth as thick as ahoy aro long. It is this operation that de stroys the small limbs the excavations cut ting off the sap vessels. The time of de positing the eggs continues till ?Mont the 20th or June, when they cease. All kinds of tress and shrilly are selected by them for their deposits except pines or other turpen tine trees. They do not seem to select the hardest nor the most soft wood, but that which is about the size of their bodies or less, seems to be chosen ; the operation re quiring them to rasp the sides of the limb with their claws, which they could not do so well if the limbs were larger. By grasping firmly with their claws, they are able to make great pressure on the point of the ovi positor, and thus effect their object. From the Ist to the 20th of June, all shrubbinfe of value should be protected, either by care fully covering it with cheap gauze, or in the case of pot plants, by keeping them in the house. About the 25th of June, the eggs will be ready to batch. Then take a limb containing them, cut carefully till you ex pose the eggs, and then take them out, place them iu the palm of the hand, and they will hatch in a few minutes. The little insect frees himself from 'the egg precisely in the same *ay that the lar g e one did in the spring, by rupturing the shell on his back. As s`eon as he is fairly out of the shell he starts oil' bri.shly in search of foal. Let him gdt to ground and you will see him work his way into it, follow him and you will see him attach himself to the tender roots of grass and otherivegetables, and commence taking up the liquid exudation from the surface with his little rostrum or snout. These ob servations can only be made with a good magnifying glass. By the aid of the glass you can see the young insect has every feath er and member precisely the same as the arge one had when he came from the ground in the spring. You can sometimes see great numbers falling from high trees.— They are like little motes in the air, and require sharp sight to see them. They are so small, and their apparent specific gravity so inferior, that they are not injured by the fall. The advent of the locusts is a great festival for the hogs. And as soon as the insects appear above the ground, chickens, turkeys, and all poultry, will also have the feast. So fond are the fowls, birds, pigs, c., of.these insects that they will scarcely touch other food during the locust season. This has a remarkable effect on all hen eggs laid after the locusts appear—their yolks are nearly while. The chickens -become very fat, and of fine flavor. Even the little wren will be seen flying off with a locust in its mouth, and all the inseetiverous birds then have a great festival." [From the Washington Chronicle, Jane 4, 1868. McPHERSON'S POLITICAL MANUAL FOR 1863--We are gratified to learn that Hon. Edward McPherson, Clerk of the House of Representatives, has in press a Political Manual for 1868, in continuation of his valuable manuals for 1866 and 1867. These publications hafe become standard in this country, and have had a favorable reception in Europe._ They are, practically, an analytical compilation of the political facts of the , period they embrace, and they include everything important to a clear and accurate understanding of the events to which they relate. They are prepared with great care, and are marked by exact impar tiality, and, viewed as a contribution to our political literature, They are of the highest value. A similar work done for our pagt political history would be an infinite aid to every student, statesman, scholar, and politician; but we know of no one who proposes to himself so herculean an undertaking. '= The political events which have trans pired from April, 1868, to July, 1868, have been of the most important character, including, asthey do, the:complete develop ment of the Congressional policy of recon struction, the adoption by the people and acceptance by Congress of constitutions in most of the Rebel States, the attempted im peachment of President Johnson, and the preliminary movements in and out of Con gress bearing upon the pending Presiden tial election. The volume will contain this entire record, as well as much more, for we obierve in the table of contents such refer ences as the following : Orders, Letters, Papers, and Votes in the Senate respecing-Secretary Stanton's HUB- pension, attempted removal, and final re tirement, and the confirmation of his suc cessor. It is not difioult to see that a book with so rich contents, carefully prepared, accu rately stated, and copiously indexed, will meet a great public want, and naturally have a large demand. Yet it is evident, in many instances, the provision usually made for the escape of lightning is so inefficient as to fail to prevent disaster. 11eluxsoN's Copper Rod, however, is a per fect protection and is pronounced by scien tific men to be the very best in use, being made entirely of Copper. Copper being eight times better conducting .metal than Iron, and having four inches surface, it fol lows that it is equal to 20 Iron rods of the or- dinary size. The price is so trival, (being put up at 30 cents per foot,) compared with the advant ages of a certain protection against the ter rific effects of lightning, that it is certainly to the interest of all persons to have them. Why tthen delay so important a iratter, when a few dollars invested In AlurisoN's Copper Rod will place you and your prop erty and family out of danger as long as the building stands ; or will you delay until the crash of broken thunderbolts and the vivid burning of fierce lightning awakes you to the necessity of this certain protection ?
