The ground should be covered with leaves, clean hay, or straw While fruiting, in order to keep the fruit from thou:id and dust. In the winter they shoidd have a covering .of leaves, straw, or corn fodder to protect them from the cold. ILESOVATING OLD:MEA1)1011VS. John Kelsey, of - Yardle, yville, Pennsyl vania, who has an original and good way of doing many things, reports to the American agriculturist his method of renewing old mowing lots without plowing. "If the sur face of the. meadow is sufficiently smooth, that is, neediriO6 moving of the surface, the most effectual Way is to harrow it until the sod is entirely loose, using a Kelsey harrow (that is, one with a pole or shafts.) This should be dene immediately after mowing, as the hot sun will then kill all the grass roots. Let it be harrowed about once every ten days until about the 25th of August, then spread on fifty bushels of lime to the acre, and harrow it well. Sow the timothy seed about four quarts per ads, about the first of September, roll it down, and put up the barsor shut the gate, and if you do net get a crop of grass the following harvest, then ) set me down for a humbug.— Perhaps some may say that 'the grass roots w ill clog up to the harrow ;' if so, rake them into windrows and set fire to them, and then scatter the ashes over the lawn. I dressed up a n - old meadow of ten acres, in Bucks county, P enosylvania, and succeeded in raising twen ty-five large two-horse loads of clean timothy it ay the first crop, where in former years only :two loads of trash had been raised, and that 'by a man whom tradition says was 'the best farmer in Bucks county.' " CLovsa stcrk Timornv.—A. Hadley, in com munication to the Northivcßtern Farmer, gives what he regards as three important rea ons why clover should always be grown with. timothy. First, the' clover being tap rooted penetrates deeply, stands drouth, mellows the soil, and the timothy grows much stronger and holds up the clover. Secondly, if sown for pasturage, the timothy almost universally prevents the clover from swelling cattle.— Thirdly, bay is too binding, especially for cat tle, and clover too washy (succulent), hence both together are better than either alone. To these we may add, tinder the head of the first that where grass comes in a rotation, it is of the utmost importance, on a clay soil, that at. least a part of this grass crop be clover. It will serve to mellow and loosen the heavy soil in a remarkable degree; so that when turned over with a plow, it will not only be rich, but loose and friable. If, on the other hand, dm _ othy alone , be sewn, (which some do because the hay sells better,) the soil will turn over heavy and clammy, and be unfit for any crop which Is to follow. The same correspondent says that he is partial to rye for calf or sheep pasture, which he occasionally sows in the eummeror autumn, after a crop of corn ; and then, after being pastured winter and spring, it is turned tinder fora spring crop—corn it the soil be strong enough—or it may be allow ed to go to harvest. Sc;wnto Guess Ssan.—Mr. Cephas John son said he had usually made a practice of seeding down to grass with the oat crop ; how ever; any other grain could be used. The grotind Is put in good condition ; then the grain desired to be used is wet up lightly by stirring it up with water and draining so as only the surface of the grain shall be moisten ed. Then to every three bushels of oats, turn on twelve quarts of timothy seed and one and one-half pounds of clover, and mix thorough ly with the grain. The grass seeds adhere to the kernels of grain, and both can be sown broadcast at one operation. The grass seed is spread very evenly by this method, and is very. sure to take. Mr. Johnson thought the grass seed, being in contact with the grain, recelvedlconsiderable nutriment from its de cay, and for this reason was .sure to take and do well. He remarked that when the land was manured in the spring previous to seed ing, he omitted the clover as his soil was nat ural to clover, the clover doming in too thick _ Jy if seed and manure are used at the same tie Mr. Willard said he had tried the me _!4,li9d iecommended by Mr. Johnson, and found it to succeed Well.— Utica Herald. . Rams Brrrrsa Rms.—Too much impor- tqnce calinot be attached to.puddling the roots of trees and plants in clay mortar Just before planting. A farmer in La Salle county set a quantity of Osage Orange hedge Slants one day; atnight he placed the balance in mud ' atid planted them the next day. The season proved to be a dry one,-- , the plants set the first day were an entire failure, those planted last made a good stand. In the ordh* - mode of setting hedges, it is very common totase an occasional plant, leav ing a gap very difficult to fill in future. By dipping them in mud, then burging until buds begin to burst, all dead plants - can be detected and thrown out and a perfect hedge grown. huts for hedging ehould always be assorted into two slue, setting each size, continuous ly; as when planted indiscriminately the large ones overshadow and kill out the smaller. .1 Now is the critical period for fruit, and frui t growers should give their trees daily atten tion. Caterpillars .and the curcuilo may now be dfstrtryedLwe have already given several excellent methods of doing so--andthe the re sult will be a large increase in the yield of fruit. The prospects for fruit in This section - la good, And those who fail, now by neglecting to bestow a little care upon their trees, need find fault only with themselves.
