Hence in many instances, they still maintain the extreme prices current during the war, while neat+ all other com modities have. been peat* reduced in value —some of them belo* the actual coat of pro duction. This state, of things, indicating a departure from it, well balanced and healthy system of national Industry; cannot long continue with out working great mischief to tile general wel fare of the country and all its material inter ests. The remedy is the re-tnfOrcement of the • corn raising, the wheat raising, the potatoes raising community from the over-crowded cities and large towns where business is over done. We Want more farmers, , and we want farmers to plant more; to sot/ more, to raise more cattle, to hire more help. In no other way than by increasing the agricultural pro ductions of the country can the toll tide of prosperity return to our country. Cheap and abundant food is the primary and!indispensa liecondition:Of success to the prbductive in dustry ofevery nation, and witholut it there can be no permanent and solid development inn* .41;s-branches. • The recruits for the ranks of the tillers of the soil must be drawn chiefly from abroad and from our large cities. The commercial claws, which are largely over-stocked, should furnish their full quota, and the thousands of able bodied young men who are noir out ofemployment, and looking in 'Tali for Atone to smile upon them in the ma productive and uncertain walks of mercantile lifeywould do well, when the Spring opens, to turn their faces resolutely towards the un developed fields of the rand (Hattie* where the sure reward- of honest industry awaits them. I believe that the next season is to witness the rendre of a movement like this. -Let ev ery farms, then, prepare , to co-operate in it —by enlarging his field of crperathme—plow- Int mbrii, — iiwing and planting more and in vesting more. - .llis tetrad will not fail him J. B. G. Patin -7 .*T MANLILI—sow TO SATE AND USE IT.—Poultry manure, one of the most valua ble fertilisers made upon the farm, is too often allowed to go to waste. The hens and tur keys roost upon trees, , underithe shed, in the wagsn-house, .or wherever it happen& To save the manse, these-birds must be taught to moat in me place. Turkeys readily take to elevated poles near the house or barn, and these sheold always be provided for them.— Sweep up their drcppings every few days, and put In a box or barrel, and keep dry. Hens will roostunder, cover, and a hen-house should always be one of the farm buildings. The floor, if not of boards in a loft, should be such that it can be cleaned easily and frequently. It is well to keep plaster or dried peat under the fowls. Put the sweepingB in old barrels as fast as they accimulate. In a dry state they will keep a long time without much low. It is customary to mix these droppings with wood ashes, Without much attention to de finite proportions, at the time of planting, and drop them in the hill for corn and potatoes.— If care is taken to keep the seed from contract with the manure, they produce very satisfac tory results. But this is not the best way of using it. Two or three weeks before plant ing, mix the contents of the barrels with about three times their bulk of moist loam or peat under cover. When the mass is well heated, shovel it over, and mix with it as much more loam or peat, and let it lie until mated. This may be worked into beds prepared for garden seeds, or dropped, a handful to the hill, for field crops, and it will always tell a good story at harvest time. LIME ♦aouxn APPLE Taxes.—The Cincin nati Enquirer says': "We have known some some farmers make it a regular practice for a succession of years to throw caustic lime 'a round their apple trees in the springand sum mer. We once noticed that a tree standing in the immediate tr - lnity of our dwelling had all at once put forth \ with renewed energy, and we were at loss forsome time to define the cause. On exanthiation we found that a quantity of lime, Which had accidently been spilled, and rendered worthless by becoming mixed With the refuse on the stable floor, had been throWn at the toot and around the tree, and to ,this, as the principal cause, we im mediately accredited the ririvescence and re newed fructification of the tree. Taking the hint from the incident, we pur chased twelve cults of lime, and applied half a ballast In each of the trees in our orchard, aid found that it produced immediate hem field eftbets. Not the health of the tree only, but five quality of the, fruit also was greatly improved. This application will be especial ly beneficial in soils where there 'is a redun dancy of vegetable matter. We would advise our farmers in eomeplaces, especially hi new forest lands recently cleared, and on low lands, to make trial of this experiment and see whether it is not deserving of the high recom mendation it secures. Bev YOUR Firemes.—A hone, remarks the Rana World, will get tired of standing and treading - an a hard floor; so will a cow, a sheep, a man. A. soil bed feels easy—gives rest. And yet we neglect the bedding of our stables, to a great extent. Injured limbs and ether ailments, especially of the hoof, are the results often of a neglect here, as has been clearly enough shown, and as any man can clearly enough see, if he gives the subject a a memenit r e thought Bed with straw which is *MA or sawdust, or tanbark, or shavings. The-dryer these materials are the better. Ev ery day remove the moistened bedding, and midst* with new. Such a floor, well bed dad; adds greatly to the warmth of a stable, andithus becomes a fodder saver. The small holes aryi *vices In a floor, with a gocd bedding upon them, will ie. little or no cold through, and will drain .the stable.
