t i t tram .itstiratima. ' Vor the "topee eXe entrinn," . recent number of the "STAR AND :See: tear." contains a eamtetunicsttiodbover the **- natant of "A Farmer," ingesting the pro priety of i stockheg the poor-houes term with improved stock fir the benefit of the county. The writer thinks an unusual interest, is felt st present uPon this stied, Wbich, Wit be the case, must be hailed-with pleasure by every thinking farmer of the county. The expediency of placing the matter in : the hands of the ,Pirectors cot tihe, foor Off, how ever, well be questioned: scasject - al those di . newt! are, to -do 1 /0 1, *0.404 or PiittY polities—elected as they olten are , , wi th out eny • re fi nenoe to their , ability, - but simply to their dvallithility—ignorant, as many of them are, not only of ell improved stock, but of the principles which govern all stock tmseding, it becomes a matter of serious doubt, whether they are the men to undertake this matter with a reasonable prospect of success. There are, *vreveu otherrlanesidopted in different sulking of the CorintrY for the im provement of stack, which have met with success and the adoption of - which deserves consideration here. One, most generally adopted, is for the agricultural societies to take the matter. in hand. The 4gridultnral society of a county could very easily under take the ,purchase of "thorough bred" horses end cattle, and hire out their services to the farmers, so as - not only to bee greed benefit to the county, but also pectudidityprciatibb" to itself. The neighboring county of Camber , land adopted this plan with Amens, into far as improving their horse stock is °warned; as to the profit I have never heard any steal meat. A competent person, however, in formed me that the colts bred fives .4.stallif. inttoduced them by the eyelet, treat Ken tucky, were "highly prized," and the min profitable animal I ever raised was a cob aired by this horse ; notwithstanding the fact that I paid twenty dollars fht: hi, 'trying*. It can, easily be seen that If t h e stxdidy pin ches:lA hone and hire him out at 'twenty dcdiars a mare, and that horse get from thirty to forty colts in a season, it will yield quite a remuner ative income. The AgricultUnd Sodety of Massachusetts has for some time been engaged in the importation of good stock tor the bene fit of their State. It has imported hem draft stallion of the "Nornian" and "Clyde dale" order, and Alderney cattle, with much benefit • to the farmers of the State. If, however, the Agricultural Society, for lack of funds or any other Nilo; is unable to undertake this enterprise, then a joint stock company truism be formed by the farm ers for this purpose; By making the value of the shares of stock so low - as to be in the reach of almost every one, a‘sufficient fund could easily be raised for the purchase or st least one first class horse, whose services miglitt then be confined to the share owners or not, as might seem desirable on trial. After the matter had once been tested, the opera lions of the company might be extended ei ther to the purchase of other horses or cattle as might seem prudent. In any event If the project is to succeed, it must be placed under the management of the men who are to be benefited by it, and are therefore interested -in its success. Another question presents itself in connec tion with this matter, which requires thought 'that is, How and where- begin the improve ment ? Obviously with the most valuable stock first, which is the invites. But what horses'are to be looked to for the best results? . On this point, doubtless, opinions will differ. AU however will agree that the horses of this county are suiceptible of great improvement, and, lifter all that may be gild about the fancy horses of the day, there is no animal in this line it pays the farmer so well to raise as good-sized, active family horses. Every buyer that comes to you to buy a horse wants one that can "work anywhere," in the car riage or the cart, and what everybody wants, everybody should seek to supply. No* there is no horse which so uniformly stamps his qualities on his offspring as the "Thor oughbred" horse ot England, tracing his on gin back, as he does, for centuries, through the "Darby" and "Godolphin" Arabian to his ancestors ot the Desert, he has become so emphatically thoroughbred, as to stand far above all other animals as a distinct breed. Their want of sufficient size is often an objeo tion. This has been overcome to a great ex tent by the breeders of Kentucky. The cli mate and pasture of that State is so well adap ted to the growth of all animals, that the "Blooded" horse..halt here attained a six* and muscular development superior to what he possessed in his native land. A horse of this kind, brought here from Kentucky or else where, would be the very best animal to eon with our coarse, 111-bred mares. The offspring might then naturally be expected to possess the size desirable, and also much of the sprightliness, hardihood and docility of the sire. The object, furthermore, to be desired, would be to nisei a class - of mares, which would lay the foundation for further improve ment. The Bockity t of Massachusetts, as well as the stock companies of Ohio, are now introducing the heavy Clydesdale stallions of England and the heavy French breeds. These horses weigh from 1,400 to 1,700, and when crossed with sprightly Ewes of good blood and size produce a horse weighing from 1,100 to 1,400 lbs.-_-just the kind of horse every body wants, possessing - the strength, speed and endurance of the '"Percheefon" horses of Prance, eo mucli praised by all travellers. If mares of the kind speciebd could be raised here, and when raised, - would then be "stint ed" to the stallions named, a kind of horses could be raised, which, in ten years, would double the value of this 'sox* in the county. In view of these faCts, it seems unwise to delay the beginning of it a day long than necessary. Let there be a definite plan set tled upon is the start, and let it be placed in the bands of prudent, thinking men, instead of the "fancy" racing men of the age, who are mote successful in breaking down than in building up the horses of the day. I hope other "Farmers" will give thelr l yiewi on this subject. D. P. F. How TO Brun A, CORN-011111...4t Is asked how to build a rat-proof corn-crib.
