inquiry as to why the project known as the
"Gettysburg Asylum for Invalid Soldiers" had
been exempted from special tax duty as a Lot

charitable enterprises on the endorsement g
a District Collector. In this. case, Collector
Jons H. DiEnt.of Philadelphia, had endorsed
the application for u.remission of the tax, and

TO BE READ AND REMEMBERED.—

Since the con ,, olidisticur of : the"Ors.u. Aaff?

refrained from armoying our frlmds with

that with - the increased expenses incident to
the enlsrgement of thcfpaper, furnishing our
uew office—the cost of paper, type, ink —the
employment of hands, Ltc.—all of whieh re-
quire cash payments, we are out of pocket
at this date, with sundry heavy bilLs for pi
per requiring immediate payment. We are,
therefore: compelled to call on our friends to
help us out, and THAT AT ONCE. A all kinds
of business are rapidly passing Under the
cash system, newspaper men, if they wish to
live, will have to follow suit. Notwithstand-

of our editorial brethren to run up their
subscription, to $2.50 and s‘l,lVe continue to

With our enlarged circulation we can afford

While $2 may seem but a trifle to each
subscriber, when multire led by 2,000, it be-
comes a considerable figure. Creeks and
Rivets are made up of tiny rain-drops, hi
significant in themselves. If each rain-drop
were to withhold its contribution, and refuse
to lesNie its home in the rain-cloud by rea-
son of its insigniflealke, ere long the streams
would cease to flow ,',and the mills to grind.
Just so with subscriptions to newspapers—
each in itself a trifle, but in the aggregate
making a stun total that would make glad
the' Printer's heart—take away his troubled
dreams —and diffuse bright and cheering
sunshine all through the office. Many of
our friends have been thoughtful enough to

1,3/Essits.. Borman :— ln conversations with
some of my neighbors, it occurred to us that
RI would be a good idea it the Directors of th4t
Poor of this county were to purchase and put
on the farm belonging to the' Poor House
some of the improved stocks for Beef and
Dairy purposes now attracted so much atten
tion. Improved stock is badly needed in this
county, but most of farmers are prevented
from purchasing by lesson of the high prices
at which they are held. Now it would not
cost the county more to feel the best of stock
titan to feed inferior stock. The increased
outlay in their first purchase would be but a
trifle to the tax-payers, while a great benefit
would be conferred on the public by introduc
ing in this way improved stock. At the last
County Fair I noticed some fine stock au ex
hibition from the College at Emmittsburg, and
understood that the College had realized about
iOOO in sale of calves the last year, to say
nothing of the good done to the neighborhood.
Now, if a private Institution can do that much,
why not the Directors of the Poor, acting as
public officers? I leave this suggestion to
those interested. A FAEMEE.
