Within the last few years the busi ness of producing capons has grown rapidly in this country, and Increas- ing numbers of capons are being raised in the middle western states, During the winter months capon Is regularly quoted in the markets of the large eastern cities. Massachu setts and New Jersey are the great centers for the growing of capoas, while Boston, New York, and Phil- adelphia are the Important markets. Time Not Important. The time of year when caponizing should be performed, so far as the ef- fects of the operation and the rapidity and ease of healing are concerned, Is of little importance. The capous seem to recover and do well at any time, Certain other considerations, however, do Influence the time, says the United States Department of Ag- riculture, The age and size of the ockerel are very important. As soon as the cockerels weigh one and a balf to two and a half pounds, or when two to four months old, they should be operated upon. The lower age and weight limits apply particu larly to the American breeds, while the higher apply to the Asiatics. If smaller than this, thelr bodies do not give room enough to work handily. On the other hand, they should never be over six this time the testi & considerable arteries carry blood, and the these arteries and causing the bleed to death is greatly increased Demand During Holidays. fact thay capons are In great months old, as by cles have developed to extent, the greater danger of spermatic f The est demand and bring the from the Christmas season snd of March, and that it takes about ten months to grow and finish them properly, makes It the chicks in early spring so that they will be of the proper size for capon izing In June, July and August. Automobile Is Raising Standard of Work Horse The smdll, seedy, misfit horse is now a “has been.” The automobile has put it out of business. The auto- mobile was responsible for a_cut in the price of horses, and, of course, the scrub suffered most. As a result, says W. H. Peters, head of the animal hus bandry division of the Minnesota ex. periment station, University farm, St Paul, the type of horse one sees now is the big strong animal, able to do a honest day's work. It is the lattef type that the farmer should raise, if he has the market'ng of stock In mind. “Breed only from high class stock of good draft type,” says Mr. Peters. The scarcity of horses is such, be. lieves Mr, Peters, that the farmer may very well look to the raising of enough colts to meet at least the power needs of his farm. Comb Honey Difficult Comb honey is more difficult {o pro- duce than extract owing to the bees having an aversion to working in the section supers. To get them there re quires crowding. Early in the spring, when the colonies require extra brood rearing space, it is customary to give a second brood chamber, Later, in the flow, when nectar Is coming in well, this second brood chamber is removed and the super containing the sections is placed, without excluder, pext the brood chamber, blossoms’ opened be se Successful Farmers “The most successful farmers study carefully the general trend of prodac- tion, and witheut disorganizing their general plans, nevertheless try to go somewhat counter to the prevalling trend. Stch farmers usually have the higher priced stuff to sell.” Henry C. Wallace, United States secretary of sgriculture, | Farmers Lose Much on Wheat Dockage Failure to Clean Grain on Farm Is Cause of Loss. (Prepared by the United States Departmen’ of Agriculture.) Farmers In the spring-whent states lost millions of dollurs last yeat through failure to clean thelr wheat on the farm. The farmers of four spring-wheat states hauled to market 11,600,000 bushels of dockage mixed with thelr wheat. They lost millions of bushels of wheat In reduced yields by growing weeds; $075,000 paid for threshing dockage; $800,000 in freight paid on dockage: by weed seeds low- ering the grade of wheat, und by los Ing the feed value of the dockage, These facts are brought out In an Investigation by the United States De partment of Agriculture, which is now waging an Intensive campaign in the spring-wheat states to induce farmers to clean thelr wheat on the farm. The quantity of dockage last year, if re moved from the wheat, would have fed (with addition of roughage) 3,500, 000 lambs, thus adding weight worth about $6,700,000, the department says. Wheat should be cleaned preferably at the thresher with a portable disk cleaner, or with any cleager at the granary. Cleaning at the farm re moves the dockage for feed: increas es the market value of the grain: provides clean wheat for sowing, and good A descriptive {llustrated phasiziug the need for cleaning wheat at the farm has been prepared hy the department, copies of which will be displayed at banks, elevators mills, raliroad stations and other pub lie places through the spring-wheat territory.
