The Biggest Farm Crops, The nation’s principal farm ciops this year are worth about five and a half million dollars, exceeding by more than half a billion their value ip 1914, the previous banner value year in the country’s crop history. There has been an unprecedented harvest, many of the crops exceeding their best rec- orde, and high prices due to ipfluence of the European war have contributed to swell the total value, Btatistics announced by the Depart- ment of Agriculture in its November crop report base values on prevailing November prices, Corn with a pro- duction of 3,090,609,000 bushels—34,- 000,000 bushels below the record crop —ig worth $1,818,025,071, the most valuable corn crop ever grown. It ex- ceeds the former biggest value crop, that of 1814, by $160,000,000, Wheat, with the iargest production ever known iu any country, 1,002,029, 000 bushels, or about one-fourth of the world’s wheat crop this year, is worth $032,882,999, or about $54,000,000 more than the record made in 1914. The oats crop also was a record one, both in point of production and value, The barvest was 1,517,478,000 bushels almost 100,000,000 bushels better than the record of 1912 and its value $682,500,822, is $33,000,000 more than the record value of the 1914 crop. Barley, rye, sweets potatoes, hay and rice were record crops in point of production and tobacco almost equal- led its best production, The rye and hay crops were records in point of value, In this year’s harvest the corn crop passed the three billion bushel mark for the first time, and the wheat crop crossed the one billion merk for the first time, Potato prospects declined 9,000,000 bushéls during October, the crop now being pisced at 859,253,000 bushele, That is 46,000,000 less than last year's crop and the prospective moderate supply for winter use is reflected in the sharp advance in farm price from 48.7 cents a bushel on October 1 to 60.8 cents on November 1. The November Will Restook With Turkeys and Quail Pennsylvania's state game commis. sion is going into the planting and propagation of small game this fall and wioter on a ecele larger than anpy- thing ever previously attempted in the history of game protection in the United Btates, and, that the work may be gotten under way immediately, will send ope of its most valued ¢xperts to Mexico. Bince the Pennsylvania markets de not demand a steer of high method will produce good, marketable animales with the greatest economy. bird life of the state, roughage Le Both quail and turkey are of the same species as the northern birde, only a trifle smaller, as the climate of the Mexican bighlande, while severe | in winter, doesn’t reach the same Jong- draw-out intense savagery as is some- times experienced in Pennsylvania. But, with a little care, these birds will survive and thrive, turkey and quall alike, and their oflspring will be just as hardy as the native Pennsylvania stock, The state is going to Mexico for the birds because it is there only that the birds can be procured in spything like the quantity desired, as all other states mostly have strict laws sgsinst ex- porting quail, and those that can be procured cost snything up to $60 » dozer. Turkeys cannot be procured at all, Extreme care must be exercised In importing these birds to guard sgains! importing disease along with them, Ibe United Btates government game officials are encouraging the Keystone state to go after the birde, but they let it be known that they have to under- go rigorous government successfully before they grate, The geme officials are opposed to putting “seed ’’ game out where il may be shot immediately before it has a chance to breed, so only those sec- tions where the quail and turkeys will get a chance to establish themselves before being hunted will be considered in distributing birde.
