Attorneys Declare it Would be Considered Illegal by Court and Jary, An opinion prepared by Harvey J. Heinly, William J. Rourke and Isaac Hieser, expounding their view of the “ porrupt practices '’ act, was present- ed Baturday to a committee appointed by political candidates and leaders in Berks county hired the above lawyers to interpret the new law. Although the opinion is exhaustive, dealing with every phase of the gtatute’s provisions, popular interest was centered on the problem as to the exact latitude a candidate might have in relieving the thirst the honest voter. On this point the opinion says: “We g of voters by a on 4 canvass or at ings would properly be and jury as done the voters; titute an illegal meaning of therefore be a wno rf Of believe that the treatil candidate w= political meet regarded by a court with intent to infiuence would be hel expenditure the act, and violation of ti} ii We man, even th treat his 1 ciates as he that a ondidate, may I and asso- has ceustomed to do, i out intent to rit of the act, ”’ for the ting friend- men likely to beer-launched of the would Lhhowever, ends provided i violate the Appar ntiv, hope the + thing formal opinion een made for {ates of vari- i! candidates in rerned entire- as riven. lisesi aio— Engraved Uards, } ra i invita The cards, office, al this Day Schou 1 unces that she lin Centre Hall, be- tinue for six ERMAN, { tre Hall, Pa. - pene — ved ann Boalsburg Normal and Preparatory School, his school will room, Mon- continue eight The spring term of open in the Hig i day, April 16th, weeks, Classes will pecially the needs those preparing to teach. s¢t anda be formed to meet es teachers and I'he higher aught, Boarding may be procured at very reasonable rates, For further information, address H. Perkins being denied. This would be an excellent move in any event, and should not de- pend upon any contingency. It would probably disclose that a number of corporations besides life Iinrurance companies had been using their stock- holders’ money for purposes not con- templated by their charters. It would throw light aleo perhaps upon other matters of importance and indicate the reasons why certain individuals enjoyed a political pull. Buch a state- ment would add impetus to the move- ment to prevent corporations from contributing to campaign funds. It may be that the threat to make this statement intended to discourage further legal proceedings, but if so it should not avail. By all means let us have all the facts in the case, regard- less of the consequences. is sorta —— LOCALS, A son was born to Rev, and Mis. ward K. Shultz, at Cearfoss, Md. H. F.
