The first session was called to order by the disriet chairman, Prof, H. CU, Rothrock, of the Boalsourg High Sehool, Toe first topic on the program was “ Pue disciplinary value of the school to the pupil,” bad assigned to Prot. LL. KE. Potleuberger, of Piue Grove Mills, but as he was absent that topic was dropped and the next topic was taken up. Thiogs worth while—For the teach- er, for the pupil, for the parent-—was first discussed by H. H. Ream. He spoke of the teacher being a moulder and fashioner for the pupil. That the community looks upon the leacher as a guide and a helper ; that the devel opment of the pupil is three-fold— mentally, morally aud physically. The oiher speakers to whom this sub- ject was assigned being absent, it was opened for general discussion, H. M. Hosterman, of Boalsburg, made a few remarks. He spoke of us all being pupils and learners at any and all ages. Teachers must aim to give the greatest good to the greatest number, and can- not take any of the branches that are not worth while ; also all are a bundle of habits, some are large bundles while others are small ; correct habits are of vast importance. E. H. Williams, of Oak Hall, gave some very good hints, He referred to the value of home study, confidence on the part of the pupil, ete, County Superintendent D. O, Etters was then called upon and gave some very good thoughts. He spoke of the value of electing good directors, make them feel they are the power, the main spring of the educational machinery. It is very important and it is the pa- rents’ busivess to see that the child at- tends school regularly. One of the first things on the part of the pupil is confidence, to know that you Know your lessons. The world wants com- petency which largely depends upon the teachers of today. Teachers must study the boys and girls under them, and remember that there is more goo than bad in any child, Teaching will never become a profession uutil those engaged therein make it such. Hurrisou thought so much copy- ing the fault of poor spelling, snd H. M. Hosterman gave the phonetic method of reading as a cause, Then followed a recitation, entitled “ Little Pete's Xmas,” by Miss Mar- garetta Goheen, which was well ren- dered and appreciated. The topic next discussed was '* How can we stimulate a desire in the pupils for choice literature?’ This subject waa quite ably discussed by Prof, J, K. Bituer, of Ceutre Hall, He put great stress on the proper selection of litera- tare aud referred to the best American poets, and standard periodicals and publications. Other remarks on this subject were made by Prof, Rothrock aud Prof, Botteuhorn, * Has the free text-book law in ope- ration proved a great sucess 7’ was ably discussed by Prof. H. B. Botten- horn, whose retusrks were highly ap- preciated by the audience ss they fur nished much food for thought. R. B. Harrison and Supt. Etters added some ideas on the subject, Music followed, after watch present were favored with a ron by Marjorie Rothrock which was much appreciated.
