An Exeltrd Fireman,
Bome time ago in a suburban town
there was a soccession of fires, It was
before a paid fire department was organ
ized, and the work of subduing the vari
ons outhreaks fell to a volunteer farce of
fire fighters, who took great pride in their
work, One night there was a midnight
alarm nnd a great erowd gathered. Upon
the arrival of the volunteer force it was
discovered that only one lantern was
available. The smoke was dense, but very
little finme appeared, and the night was
very dark.
Finally one cornice of the burning
structure broke out in a sheet of flame,
As the erowd cheered a man at the nozzle

light.
“For heaven's sake, man, keep the wa.
