TREATY MAY STAND, It is not believed in diplomatic cir-| cles that Great Britain will make any | serious objections to the amendments to the Hay-Pauncefote treaty. The in- te rests of Great Britain will be bevefit- ed greatly by the Nicaraguan canal, more so than those of any other coun- try except the United States. In view of this fact, universally understood, diplomats of the various European | goverments here have privately said that no amendments that the Senate might make would prevent its rati- | fication by Great Britain, so Long as the constructian of the canal can counted upon as certain. The amendments are generally re- garded, even by Senator Morgan, who opposed them, as not ma'‘erially alter- ing the spirit of the proposed treaty. It assures a neutral canal open to the ships of all nations upon equal terms at a tonnage rate considerably less thanithat of the Suez canal. This ad- vantagealone, itis believed, will lea to its acceptance by England after some correspondence and discussion. In addition to this a powerful influ- ence will be brought to bear by lead- ing Canadian statesman in favor of the treaty, because the British posses- sions in America will be greatly bene- fited by the canal. It is known here that the Canadian representatives in Great Britain are in favor of the ratifi- cation of the treaty as it stands, be- cause they believe that the canal will benefit Canada proportionately more even than the United States. The only direct means of communieation now between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Canada is through the Cana- dian Pacific Railroad and the Canpa- dian marine shipping interests will be found unanimously in favor of the canal. The amended treaty will be. sent to England this week, with an explana- tion of the amendments made by the Senate. The usual course is then to await action on the part of Great Britain, which may either ask for ex- planations through her regular dip- lomatiec channels or ratify it with out seeking any change. Should change be insisted upon by Great Britain after they are agreed upon between the United Btates and Great Britain, the treaty will have to be ratified as changed by the Senate of the United States again before copies are finally exchanged and it becomes binding upon the two na- tions, be David Over, a newspaper editor for a half century, an Odd Fellow for fifty-one years and a well-known Re publican politician of the Simon Ca- meron school, died at his home in Holidaysburg, Friday of last week Among the news papers which he edit- ed were the Inquirer, of Bedford, Pa.; the Gazette, of Lewistown, Pa, aud the Register, of Holidaysburg. Dog With Rabies Causes Terror, A mad dog scare has prevailed at Bo- | dines, near Williamsport, during the past few days. A strange dog put in An appearance about a week ago and before leaving the town a score or more | dogs had been bitten by the “tramp.” | All the dogs bitten acted queerly and attacked other canines. The half hun- | dred dogs of the village soon showed signs of rabies. Nearly all the dogs | were killed by the citizens. A little girl was bitten by one of the dogs. She | is being treated to prevent hydropho- | bia. The killing of the dogs has not | relieved the Bodinites of their trouble, | for it has been discovered that a num | ber of hogs and cows have been bitten.
