EE — Senator Hanna says it is an insult to Admiral Dewey to place his name on the list of prospective presidential can didates. Probably Mr. Hanna really means that it is an insult to President McKinley to even think of anybody else in connection with the presiden- tial nomination. But then that doesn’t make it so by a good deal. If McKin- ley made a blunder and boteh of the war—which is admitted-—and needs in- struction from Dewey how to go on, then the Admiral is the better man of thie two for the presidency and it is an insult to the American people to talk about prefering McKinley to the hero of Manila. A A A AAA The convention of the State League of Republican clubs at Harrisburg a short time ago did not overflow with enthusiasm, and in view of the fact that the Republicans are featuring the American flag as an issue in the Penn. sylvania esmpaign this year it is some- what remarkable that upon the as sembling of the convention there was not asiogle flag in the hall, large or small, and that they had to send out _ and get one, proving that boodle was first and foremost in the minds of these patriots and the flag a secondary matter. Boodle first, then the flag to gover it over, “The Republican party is one of education, and it | to make the Pennsylvania a success has done more of any the the common schools myself, if elected my to common schools other political organization in United States. The common schools are the glory of {| Pennsylvania, and have served | model for the systems of other states | er, was their main founder, mained for William A. The schools are over. | crowded, while children, barred from them, are neglected. The teachers are underpaid and justly complain that they have been compelled to wait a long time for their pittance. This blow that Governor Stone has i aimed at the schools vitally concerns every’ school teacher, school trustee and school director in the state. And again, if the governor can shave off one million dollars from the appropria~ tion in 1899, what ls to prevent him from lopping off two millions in 1901? for his alleged veto of a part of the school appropriation was merely a pre- text. The real reason for this out- rageous act on the part of the execu- tive was not given and dare not be given or commented upon by the unpa- triotie governor of Pennsylvania. It has long been a political secret that Senator Quay intended to attack the school appropriation, as he never ap- proved of the Increases leading up to the five millions. To the people of the state his not means higher local taxes, a reduction of teachers’ salaries, fewer schools and a lowering of the high standard which bas made the schools of Pennsylvania famous, He has struck at the very principle to which the people of Penn- sylvania owe their greatness as a state. He has given the lie to the proud boast that the Republican party fa the guardian eof the "Little Red Behool House,” While Governor Stone vetoed a mil- lion dollars of the school appropria- tion, he cheerfully signed the large ap- propriation for military purposes, and Indicated in advance that the already large sum should be Increased. This shows that he believes more in train- ing men to kill their fellows than he does In training our children that they may grow up without murder in their hearts, ec ——— WHAT REPUBLICAN PAPERS SAY. North American CHALLENGE TO ANTI QUAY PUBLICANS. The Philadelphia Press. which prob- ably speaks with a more authentic yoice for the McKinley administration than any other journal ir the country, says of the Quay convention: “The prominence given to national RE- tions in the formal speeches and the platform of yesterday's Harrisburg convention would greatly puzzle a for- eigner studying for the first time American political Institutions. He would understand it better when he learned that in the national field the record of the Republican party is a great and glorious one, in which all its members, and, indeed all citizens, ean take a just pride, while in this stale an unprincipled close corporation known as the machine has taken con- trol of it and uses it so far as it dare and can for its own selfish purposes, “Senator Penrose was on safe ground in eulogizing at tedious length the good work of the national Republican party, Most of the platform rides at anchor in the same haven of refuge. The en- dorsement of Governor Stone's admin- istration was, of course, to be expected from a convention constituted and con- trolled as this one was but very many Republicans will not second that en- dorsement. The expression of grati- tude to Mr. Quay and the approval of the governor's action in appointing him to the senate is a direct challenge to all the Republicans who are op- posed to Mr. Quay and think that his appointment under the circumstances Was Indecent and improper. This plank in the platform will be remem- bered when the rest is forgotten, and will cost the ticket many votes. Per. haps nothing less could be expected from a Quay convention, and the Re- publican plurality, though a minority of the whole vote, fs still very large and invites undue confidence.” Our local Republican papers do not like to hear about the excellent quali ties of the gentlemen who com pose the county Democratic ticket, ng that their popularity and eminent fitness for the places for which they are nam- ed will make it go hard publican And so it i !
