MAR. 29 THE JUDGESHIP, The president judgeship is beginning to warm iip. Republican members of the Bellefonte bar have signed a re quest to Judge Furst to consent to run for re-election. A similar request has been made by members of the Hun- tingdon bar. To both requests Judge Furst has sent a courteous reply con- senting to be a candidate for re-elec- tion. J. G. Love, Esq., has also taken the field to contest the nomination with Judge Furst. as much commotion as on the other things in a Republican district. are discussed. What the people want to avoid is the holding of special courts, bringing in outside judges to try cases in which the resident judge was concerned, which entails additional expense. This is avoided by electing a judge from outside the district, an in Schuylkill, Union, and some other districts. concerned on one side or the other, in all the cases on the trial list, hence ex- tra courts, extra judges and extra ex- pense would follow. Judge Furst's ten years out of practice might be an exception, his old cases having been disposed of at special courts during his term. It would be a wise provision if the conststution required that judges must be chosen from outside the district which they are to serve; the law per- mits this but does not make it manda- tory. rea Some one of our local millionaires sent Coxey a check for $1000 ou Pot ters bank. That check is as good as a score of others received by Coxey, and will make a good cigar lighter. — nips ——— BOGUES DOLLARS GOOD _AS GENUINE. Senator Sherman would like to ernmet is at in case the private owners of silver conclude to go into the coin- age business for themselves, and by coining forty-nine cents of silver un- dertake to pass it for a dollar of one hundred cents. To find out how things stand, he has introduced a resolution alling upon the judiciary committee to investigate and report whethex the laws against counterfeiting coins are sufficient to secure conviction where the counterfeit coins are of the same weight and fineness as the genunie, the only difference being that the gov- ernment stamp is forged. Sénator Sherman's solicitude on this subject is natural. Certainly the laws against counterfeiting never con- templated a condition under which of one hundred per cent, by furnish- ing coins exactly like those issued by the government and possessing the same intrinsic value, They were de- signed to punish those who make and circulate debased coins, and the report that a private mint in Nebraska is fineness and full weight certainly jus tifles the Senate lawyers in trying to find out whether the existing law will . cation of the counterfeiters’ art. If the statute does not specifically cover this method of counterfeiting it will have to be amended. The at- tempt to inflict the penalty of the law all respects like the genuine by invok- ing the equities of the case must prove a failure, for if it is dishonesty for an individual to attempt to pass forty- nine cents worth of silver for a dollar it is equally dishonest for a govern- ment to do it. If the government Is driven back to an honest financial basis in order to be able to protect its currency from being cunterfeited, it will prove a case in which dishonesty has wrought its own cure.
