The body was found about one

in the back of the neck and two ugly
bruises on the head confirm the sus-
picion that Carpenter was murdered
and then thrown into the creek.
James Carpenter, a son of the mur
dered man, is suspected of having com-
mitted the erime and was arrested to-
day and committed to the Newport
jail in default of bail to await the re
sult of the coroner's investigation.
There is great excitement in the com-
munity over the murder and it is the
general opinion that young Carpenter
Killed his parent to get possession of

The murdered man was about fifty-
six years old and his accused son is in
thirty-first year. The father was an
extensive produce dealer and is thought
to have accumulated considerable
money.
