A Johnstown Grand Army post has become the possessor of a valuable rel- ic in the shape of an old brass cannon which was captured by General Jack- son at the battle of New Orleans, John Shindy, a Luzerne county miner, made a bet of $10 on Saturday evening that he could drink a quart of whiskey in fifteen minutes. He won the bet but it was not sufficient to pay his funeral expenses. A large shell thrown into Fort Mec Henry by the British on September 14, 1814, is on exhibitian at Harrisburg. It was taken by Captain Evans, who pulled the burning fuse, thus avoiding an explosion of the shell. A. B. Ev- ans, of Thompsontown, is the sole owner of the shell, and will take it to the World's fair in the near future. Dr. 8B. E. Weber, who represents the State Board of Agriculture, went to West Earl township, Lancaster coun- ty, and made an investigation of the flea epidemic in that section. It has developed that the pest broke out in John Snyder's house and were brought there in a hat. His daughter is a mil- liner. He spent $700 to get rid of the fieas, At Tamaqua there is intense excite ment over a find of what scientifie tests prove to be ‘“‘chloride quartz,” containing gold in quantity to warrant working. During the past two years prospectors have been looking for lead in Ryon township. Two weeks ago a party from Philadelphia, accompanied by a geologist, arrived on the scene. To-day it was shown that chloride Quartz had been found which showed a yield of about §9 a ton. The Phila- delphians are very reticent.
