ars COBURN, Closed Thelr Places of Business and Went Fishing, A. J, Campbell came home on last Friday and remained with his family over Sunday. H. B. Ulrich, of Renova, spent a few days last week in this section vis- iting friends. He expects to visit the World's Fair before returning to Re- nova again. John Hoffa went to Lewisburg last Saturday on his new bicycle. On last Thursday all our merchants st this place took a day oft, closed their places of business, and went trout fishing; one party going to Bwift Run, the other to Cherry Run, neither par- ty being very well repaid for their la- bors. They reported the trout as be- ing very scarce. J, W. G. says he en- joyed the days sport, but he would rather angle for “beauties” omitting the word ‘‘speckled.”’ John H. Beck, of Walker township, candidate for Treasurer of Centre coun- ty, circulated among his friends in this section on last Friday. The P. O. B. of A. of this place have accepted an invitation to participate in the Memorial Day exercises at Mill- heim on the 30th inst. The boys are expecting their new regalia till that time and no doubt they will present a fine appearance. George J. Meyer has so far recover- ed from his recent spell of sickness that he was able to walk down town the other day. From Harrisbarg. The Governor announced his veto of the House bill to regulate the liability under policies of insurance on build- ings and structures against fire and lightning. A large number of appro- priation bills passed finally. It was discovered that through the imper- sonation of a member who was absent the Wertheirmer distilery bill had been made to appear on the minntes as having passed when it really failed of passage. The Senate was asked to re- turn the bill, but refused to do so. Mr. Riter secured a special order for the readings of his pure water bill. The house unseated John P. Quinnan, of Lackawanna County, and received from the Elections Committee a report unseating George Forrest, of Lancaster County. In the senate the bill abolish- ing capital punishment was defeated. A resolution was agreed to asking the Governor to return the Medical Exam- iner bill to permit of the correction of inconsistent dates. The House anti- Pinkerton bill passed finally. The Committee to investigate the alleged faulty construction of the Wernersville Asylum gave a hearing to representa- tives of the commission that had the work in charge. The State Board of Agriculture will compile statistics of the cost and sell- ing price of farm products and farm stock and of the wages of farm labor. msi AA SS Not Paying Yet, The attendance on Tuesday at the World's Fair, was lighter than it has been for many days, and the Exposi- tion people are discouraged. The av- erage paid attendance so far has not been much over 17,000 daily. The weather continues wretched and it is blamed for the poor attendance, Gate receipts do not pay the fair's run- ning expenses. At the meeting of the Local Dirbetory Tuesday afternoon a resolution was passed favoring the opening not only of the grouuds, but of every bullding inside the inclosure next Sunday and to keep them open each Sunday hereafter. . Have Got to Chicago Among those who registered at the * Pennsylvania building, World's Fair, on Tuesday from Centre Hall, were Misses Anna M. and Lizzie A., Mr. and Mrs. J. and Claude Harpster. The family are on their way to Mis soula, Montana, where they will take up their future residence. They left Centre Hall several weeks ago, and have visited friends on the way out. From Chicago they will go direct through to Montana. A A Will Rot in the Ground, Bome farmers express the opinion that the oats that was sowed several weeks ago, will rot in the ground, on account of the cool weather. It was quite cool Monday, Tuesday and Wed- nesday of this week. A Charter Granted, Ox TUESDAY a charter was granted to the Bnow Shoe mining company, Bellefonte; capital, $30,000. Directors, John W. Cook, 8. M. Buck, Bellefonte; W. F. Holt, Philipsburg. The unfavorable crop reports have had the effect to raise the price of wheat and corn two and three cents within the last week, and there is pos- sibility for still better advance. ss AM ARIA “Money makes the mare go,’ is the saying ; and it is the want of money that the Chinamen needn't go. ~HEsq.
