ROAD AND TAX LEGISLATION. A conference of the friends of the the five road bills introduced in the senate was held at which it was | decided to drop all measures but that presented by Senator Brown, of West- moreland. This bill is regarded as the best solution of the mad question yet submitted and it will be endorsed by the farmers of the other measures on this sulject which have found their way into the senate chamber. It car- vides for county and township super- visors and district foremen. It places a poll tax on all male residents over twenty-one years of age and makes cor- porations liable for the tax of alien employees. It also provides for the completion of the improvement of one- half of the width of the entire length of the road first before work! is“ com- menced on the other half, The advocates of this measure ree- ognize the fact that the revenues of the state are not sufficient to secure a large appropriation and are content to get a fair sum. A large number of the rural mem- bers propose removing their support from the Niles tax bill, w hich, if it should become a law, they claim, will disarrange the present revenue system and decrease the state revenues, and will support the Burdick biil which taxes the bonded indeptedness as well as the capital stock of corporations. The advocates of this measure say it would provide immediate revenues in conformity with the present tax law. is ————— ——— fo ot SOS THE FOLLOWING bills passed the house at Harrisburg finally: Author- izing water companies to relocate roads destroyed and to acquire land to preserve water supply from contami- nation; increasing the compensation of presidential electors and providing mileage therefor, and increasing the contingent expenses of said electors; amending the insurance laws of the state by requiring fire insurance com- panies or associations got incorporat- ed under the laws of the state to pay to the treasurers of the several bor- oughs or townships an annual bonus on premiums on the insurance effected within the limits of such cities, oughs and townships, and regulating the admission of inmates of the Sol- diers’ and Sailors, Home at Erie. No road law has passed yet—our legisla- tors are all in a muddle over the differ- ent road laws before them. bor sia ane Cholerine in Pennsylvania Swickley, Penn: We had an epi- demic of cholerine, as our physicians Rheumatism Quickly Cured, Three days is a very short time in | tism; but it can be done, | { i | by the following from James Lambert, of New Brunswick, I11.: hips and legs, when I bought a bottle | of Chamberlain's Pain Balm, cured me in three days.
