RELIGIOUS DODIES, The Roman Catholic Chureh First merical Strength, i Charles E. Buell, chief of the divi- | sion of religious statistics of the forth- | coming United States census reports, | has finished his labors. His general | report is the first one authorized by | Congress, and contains the returns of | the denominations in America. The | total membership is 20,347,304, with | church property valued at $646,125 904. | The Roman Catholic church ranks first in numerical strength, embracing 6,240,046 communicants, The Roman | Catholic church property is valued at! $118,000,000. The Methodist Episcopal | church is next, with a membership of | 2,230,354, and with church property | aggregating in value $69,000,000. | In the southern part of the United | States there are numbered in’ the | Methodist Episcopal faith 1,250,000 | persons, and the property belonging | to the church reaches the sum of $19,-! 000,000. Other and smaller bodies of Methodists aggregate 4,000,000 mem- bers. The Baptists are third, 3,000,000 | strong, and next come the colored de- | nominations, with a total membership of 3,000,000, and a church property valuation of $30,000,000. The Preshy- terians are fourth in number. The Protestant Episcopal denomination, | while numbering only 500,000 persons, has the most property per capita, ag- gregating $79,000,000, The valuation of church property by census agents does not include schools, parsonages or Any feature excepting the edifices and the sites upon which they are built. Of Hebrews there are 150,000. The Quakers number 100,000, Mr. Buell says that the church of the Latter Day Saints is increasing rapidly in Nu- | i in membership, numbering now 66,000 and owning church property valued at $10,000,000. ri pi inn nisms No Desire to Repeat It, CHICAGO, Aug. 14—Saperintendent | Troy, of the railway mail service, who had charge of the train which carried $20,000,000 in gold from the federal sub-treasury in San Francisco to the sub-treasury New York, arrived to-day. He says he has no desire to repeat the experiences of the trip, and he is of the opinion that the government will | not try it again. The publication of | the fact that the train had started in- | creased the danger that robbers might attack or attempt to wreck the train, | and necessitated increased viligauce. | The result was the loss of many hours’ | sleep. The guards were in the front car, so situated that they could see without | being seen, and at the same time cover and protect engineer and fireman with their Winchesters. The party had | two or three scares on the trgp. At one point in the mountains the rail way employee, who had placed tor- pedo on the track, warning that there was a train in front, came near losing his life as a train wrecker when it ex- ploded. At another point, also in the mountains, a lot of tramps who were hiding behind rocks where the train stopped, made a dash to board it as it started, but beat a precipitate retreat when confronted by the glistening bar- rels of a score of rifles, Apne Election Pointers, Here are a few little pointers, which in view of the coming election, timely: All nominations of candidates to be voted on the general or local tickets in | November next must be certified to | the State Department at Harrisburg on or before the 13th of September, All nominations not thus certified ! can’t be printed on the uniform tickets | to be voted by all at the election. Every otherwise qualified voter, ex- | cepting those who will vote on age— | because between 21 and 22 years of age on election day—must be assessed on | or before the 8th of September. unless | they were assessed last year, : All who have not paid a state or | county tax within two years must pay i such tax on an assessment made with- | in two years on or before the Sth of | October, Failure to file nominations in time | practically defeats the candidates whose names are not thus filed, and failure to be assessed forfeits the right | to vote, and the failure to pay state or | county tax within two years also dis- | franchises the citizen. are lapis State Encampment, i Shamokin is making great prepara | tion for the reception of the State en- | ecampment of the P, O. 8. of A, which | will meet there Aug. 23-25. On the | evening of the 25th a pyrotechnic dis | play will take place. The committee of arrangements expects that at least 8000 members of the order and fifty bands will take part in the parade on the latter date. The following prizes will be awarded: $100 to the largest camp in line: $25 to the second largest camp in line; $50 to the eamp coming the greatest distance; $50 to the camp making the best appearance in line; $25 to the camp making the second best appearance; $50 to the largest com- mander in line; $50 silk flag to the | best brilled commandery in line; a set of officers’ regalins and emblems to the best drilled in line, | Fists fp A nA bo ~Take the REPORTER for the owmpaign, at 35 cents.
