CI RI A —— BE FARM NOTES, TIES, — 9 nay TIMBER FOR TiAILROAD This country Is said to be using 4 400,000 ties on its railroad: These ties, it is calculated, have to be replaced svery five years, or at the rate of B84. 5C0,000 annually. Such being the sup- posed facts, a contemporary p rtine ntly suggests whether it will not pay every farmer who can do so to cultivate suit- able timber for ties on those rough plirces or corners of his premises which are not tillable, and make railvoud ties | one of the annual products of his farm, With the increase of railroads and the decrease of our timber lands, the time must come when railroad ties will be worth their weight in silver uniess pro- wision shall soot be made to supply the demand. Perhaps some new material may be found that will a: swer as a sub- stitute for wood; but at present wooden railroad ties have their value, and the probability is that the emand for them will increase rat er than diminish 1p the future. Hence the suggestion that farmers grow ties whenever they can do go cheaply seems wise and timely. WHEAT.—A Min- gesota farmer declares that be can make more money raising hogs at three cents a pound than raising wheat yield- | ing thirty bushels per acre. An acre of clover will support eight hogs, whieh will gain 100 Ibs, in a season, making an income of $24 an acre. He | saves cxpense for seed, seeding and | threshing, and at ths present price of | grain his hog crop comes out far ahead | of his neighbor's wheat or barley, even in a favorable season for grain. When we consider (comments a Western con- | temporary on the above) that for sever- al years hogs have brought from five to six cents a pound and grain has proved a failure, it is easy to see why farmers have prospered and others have | fallen behind. | WATER FOR SHEEP IN A good many farmers think thats do not require water in Winter, and es- pecially when there SNOW On ground. This underrating the need of a good supply of water for their flocks in cold weather, causes much cruelty | and leads to the practice of false econo- my. If sheep will live by eating snow, | it is no evidence that it is best for them, any more than for any other farm stock. If good clean water is provided daily | in a warm place sheep will dnnk It} twice a day, and sometimes oftener They do not drink much at a Lime, but | a little water is a necessity for their | thrift during cold weather, WINTER, — | heep | 18 the WHEN the ground Is plowed in the | fall or early winter the frost goes down | and reaches the insects that have sought | refuge therein, The elods and lamps | are broken Ly the action of frost, and | the soil put in condition for being easily | plowed in the spring. Hard, lumpy manure is also pulverized by frost, due to expansion and contraction during al- ternate thawing and freezing, which renders the manure fine when it is spread over the surface at this season. Lox6-WooLED Saeep.— According to good authority the long-wooled races of sheep are essentially English in ori- gin. They are represented by the Lin- coln, Romney, Marsh, Cotwold and Leicester breeds, but especially by the three first named races, The position of the Leicester breed 18 particularly imteresting, not 30 much on account of the length of its wool, which indeed is short in comparison wilh that of the other long-wooled sheep, as because of its historical connection with the im- provement of all the other long-wooled races of sheep. A PASTURE will not provide food without renewal any more than the feed trough, Keeping a herd on the pasture year after year will exbaust it just as surely as the feed is exhausted in the barn. Every ounce of milk car- tied from the pasture to the barn is 50 much Joss of plant food from the soil. After the cows are stabled for the win- ter a liberal dressing of manure or fer- tilizer should be applied to the pasture, which will not only protect the grass but increase the supply of pasturage next season. Goats ean be kep. where even the sheep cannot exist The goat should find a ready sale in market, as its flesh is equal in every respect to that of the sheep in favor and quality, and meat from goats can be produced at less cost than from any other animal io sections where the range is wide, or where ‘ands are n:t cultivated, They are difficult to restrain, however, and damage or- chards, which are serious objections, but under proper conditions goals may be made profitable. INSTEAD of washing the sheep, thus rendering the animals liable to colds and disease, 1t is now proposed, in some sections where sheep are raised in large pumbers to establish wool-scouring mills, to which the wool may be carried and washed before baling. 1tisa move Variet ps RADWAY for milk cows. certain purposes, There is more experic } n the preparation n any other mad Hood's Sarsapa and In Lhe it a trial -_—_— - I.overs of knowledge and liberal sen tient have round nails, - a has racticed 1 w salt {ron WIWEer, ts, Live ¥ Po I 3 8 SUZAr usugar TorLeno, 0.
