SULLIVAN FOUND GUILTY The Jary Quickly Him~—The Slugger looks Annoyed, Parvis, Miss., Aug. 17.— Arguments in the Sullivan case were made by Dis- trict Attorney Neville for the state and ex-Attorney General Ford and Judges Calhoun and Green for the defense. The district attorney urged the jury to vindicate the good name of the state by showing that the law would be upheld, The requests to charge were then read. The jury, after being out an hour and a half. returned a verdict of guilty of prize fighting as charged in the first count of the indictment. Sullivan looked annoyed, but other- wise showed no emotion. He left the court room with several of his friends and though apparently a little down hearted at first soon recovered his geniality, The cnse against Referee Fitzpatrick will be taken up today. The body was removed from the morgue at noon and taken to the Episcopal church, where it lay in state for two hours and was viewed by a great num- ber of people. Mrs. Terry occupied a w near tl casket and watched the ace of the dead man all the while. Sev- eral times she left her seat and threw herself upon the casket. The service was read by one of the vestrymen of the church. The body was interred in the cemetery in Stockton. Mrs. Maybriek's Case. Prohibitionists in a Beer Garden. CLEVELAND, Aug. 16. The most noted Beer garden in this state is Beyorli's park, and it is the only place accessible from this city where beer is openly sold on Sundays. Iu this park the Prohibi- tionists had a basket picnic and county convention. The use of the grounds was tendered to them as 8 joke, but it was accepted, and no beer was sold dur- ing the proceedings. The convention, after nominating a ticket, closed with a vote of thanks to the park managers and the singing of the doxology. Deputy Marshal Nagle was di- rected to accompany Justice Field under this order, and is said to Mave giten Judge Terry full warning to stop When the latter began his aftack upon Justice feld, and fred at Terry as the latter was about to strike the second time Justice Field loft the overland train at the Oakland ferry and drove at once to the Palace hotel, where he was joined by his wife. He was not arrested, and the notice to the chief of police claimed to have been sent by the district attorney of San Joaquin, if forwarded, was not acted upon. Terry's Eventful Careor. David L. Terry was born in Todd county, Kentucky, in 1824. He served in the Texan army under Sam Houston. He came to Qblifornia in 1849 and set tlod in Calvefas county. In 1833 he was elegted jlstict of the stipréme court of California on the native American ticket, and upon the death of Chief Jus. tice Murray in 1857 Judge Terry became chief justice, He was o posed to the vigilance committee of 1556, and stabbed one of the members of the committes who had attempted to arrest a faend of Terry's. Terry was held by the vigi. lantes bat afterwards twas relaed, He killed Senator Broderick in a duel in 1859 as a result of political differ ences, In 1880 Terry was defeated as a Hap- cock elector, although his associates on the ticket were elected. Cause of the Tragedy. Last September he and his wife were the chief actors in a most remarkable case in Justice Fields’ comrt. When a decision was read by Justice Field which was against Judge Terry's wife the latter arose in court and declared the judge was bribed. A United States marshal attempted to arrest the woman, and was knocked down by Judge Terry, who openly defied the court. or this Sam was sentenced to sixty days in prison, while Judge Terry was given six months.
