He Fills All Visitors with the Hope of Uncertainty. A FRIEND OF ORGANIZED LABOR, So He Announces Himself to sna Advance Agent of u Candidate for Public Printer, Labor to be Fully Recognized In Public Appolntments—Variety of Visitors IxpiaNaroLis, Jan, 24 —New York wants the public printing office, and baif a score of Hoosier aspirants for the place stand aghast at the audacity of the east. If they kuew all that Gun. Harrison sald yesterday to C. K. Michasl, of Brooklyn, a Typo graphical union man, they would tremble as well as stand aghast. Mr. Michael came here in the interost of Mr. Lewis Payne, who is foreman in The New York Pres office, and who wants to be public printer, Mr. Michael called upon Gen. Harrison dur- ing the afternoon, and had a thirty-five min. ute talk with him. He told Gen, Harrison that Mr. Payne was a solid man with the typographical union, and intimated that the candidacy was in dorsed by the New York branches of the na- tional union. He came away happy, nos only over what he thought were the good chances of Mr. Payne, but over some re marks that Gen. Harrison made to him upon the subject of organized labor that rather unexpected and very interesting. Mr. Michael was very discreet in speaking of these remarks, and refused to quote them, but he said the substance was that Gen. Har rison told him that in making his appoint ments in government offices he proposed te recognize organized labor whenever it was practicable to do so, and that in such appoint ments as that of public printer personal con siderations would have no weight whatever in determining the cholee of the man. Another thing that Mr. Michael says Gen. Harrison said was that, in his opinion, the qualifications necessary to enable a man to properly fill the office of public printer were equal to those required for a place in the cabinet. Mr. Michael did not seem to think this remark at all discouraging so far as Mr, Payne's chances are concerned. There is nc doubt that, if lived up to, it will be the death knell to the ambitions of Col. William Holle way and Capt. Meredith, and even to thoss of Editor Brown, the son-in-law of Riley Mo Keen. After his visit at Gen Harrison's house Mr. Michael was entertained at a banquet by a party of Indianapolis printers, and wu sent home on an early evening train. 1. Bradford Prince, formerly a justioo a the supreme court in New Mexico, and lecturer and writer on topios connected witk that part of the country, called upon Gen. Harrison and unfolded to him his views upon the admission of New Mexico. He thinks that the territory ought to be let in A far western visitor, who probably counted for more than the ex justice, wu George Christ, the member of the Republica: national committees from Arizosa. He was on his way to New York, and be talked Fed eral patronage and the Morman question int Gen. Harrison for somes time The Mor mons are coming over from Utah into Ari gona al a rate that is alarming the other in habitants, and Mr, Christ thinks something ought to be done. Incidentally he thinks that George Christ is the best man in the world to control the Federal! offices in Ari gona. He did not put it to Gen. Harrison ix just that way, however. What he said wa to the effect that ‘broken down politician have been pastared out by recent adminis trations upon our territory, and all think § is time that our own peopis should be placed in charge of affairs” Delogate-eloct Carter, of Montana and Delegata-elect Matthows, of Dakota, both or their way to Washington, told Gen. Harri #04 they had little faith in the prospects of the admission bills tefore the pressat con gross, and want a special session to be calle to admit the territories in tine for them tc have repressutatives at the regular sessior next December, Hugo Ziemann, of Chicago, came to sex Gen. Harrison upon business which may have an important bearing on the success of the next administration. Mr. Ziemann b steward of the Richelieu hotel in Chicago and be says he cares not who maks up ths cabinet so long as he can make the dinners With his dinners, he is sure that Gen. Har rison's digestion will pever get off the track and his liver never go back on him; and with these conditions, he believes that Gen Harrison couldn't be anything but a cheerfa and popular president, if he tried. It is not known what success he attained. ware A Grand Theatrical Ruterprise. Mixwzarors, Jan. 22 The burning of the Bt. Paul Grand Opera house bas developed » new theatrical scheme. Joseph J.
